Sounds like the new Government 'Rev it' sensitive traffic light camera really works...
Damn!
Yesterday morning I was pulling out of my Street when I noticed that the lights at the top of the hill were green. Of course I put the boot in to Biddy. I left it a bit late to change in to second and she revved right out, then lost power and the engine warning light came on. When I did change into second she would not rev past 2200. The lights were red by then so I sat there on idle listening to the motor. It sounded OK so I carried on to drop the Kids at School. Still she would not rev past 2200, otherwise she performed as normal. At the School 4 Minutes later I got the B.A.S. tool out and plugged it in. The fault read something like Engine internal. Excessive torque. I can't quite remember. ( Wish I'd taken a screen shot.)
I cleared the fault but didn't turn off the motor. I carried on to work and still she wouldn't rev past 2200. I suspected it was a mechanical preventer or a solenoid that would not reset until I did turn the Motor off but I wasn't game to risk it. (Ships wait for no one.) Later on when I started up again she was all systems go.
Does anyone know what actually happened?
Cheers, Billy.

I had an identical situation.I was travelling on the highway, feeling pretty good about how the Defender was going,so I put the foot down, then same thing, check engine light on,wouldn't rev past about 2000.I pulled over, switched engine off.Started and took off ok,but light stayed on.I have an Alive tune so took it back to Bruce Davis.Fault code was also too much Torque(could there be such a thing?).Anyway ,been alright since,so I can't be much help.
Actually Marty, you have been of some help. You turned your engine off and when you started it again the engine functioned normally even though the fault wasn't cleared from your ECU. Whereas I cleared the fault but the engine remained inhibited until I restarted it. This indicates to me that the ECU only reports that the fail safe device has been triggered but doesn't either trigger it or reset it.
Cheers, Billy.

If you had cycled the ignition you would have found it would have gone back to normal straight away. Its part of the cold start electronic engine protection so it doesnt over rev when cold. It went into limp mode.

That confirms my aversion to manufacturers building cars that think they are smarter than I am.
I know not to over rev my engine when it is cold. I don't need an electronic device to prevent it.
The problem is that unless the software can anticipate every possible scenario, there can be unintended consequences of the car making decisions that the driver is quite capable of making.
Cuppabillytea's experience is just the sort of unintended consequence that occurs when a car tries to be smarter than the driver.
Luddites don't have those problems.

Hasn't happened to me but a few other members here (and Defender2.net) posted about similar things in the past. Can't remember which threads. Try a search.
