TD5 turbo

hi


well looks like my waste gate? on the turbo is seized and i need to either replace or rebuild the turbo


mechanic is quoting me around 2 k to replace
no idea on a rebuild cost


have had a look for a replacement myself for around 1200


i guess im looking for advice on what i should do next?


the car is a 2000 110 with around 170on the clock

what are the symptoms??

If it is a seized wastegate spindle:
*Take it for a drive and get it warm.
*unbolt and remove heat shield, the one bolt down the side of the heat shield is awkward but not impossible.
*unbolt the diaphragm unit, remove the circlip (just so its all out the way).
*Now you can clearly see and get to the wastegate spindle, spray a bit of lanolin spray round the shaft and lightly tap tap the spindle in each direction to try and free it up, the money is on that sooner or later it will start to free up, keep working it until its rattly loose, spray a bit more lanolin onto the shaft.
*re-assemble.

I do this on customers TD5 engines all the time..... you know, rather than have them spend $2500 on a new turbo...

*While you are in that area of the turbo, remove the plastic intake that goes into the turbo so you can clearly see the turbo intake vanes, see if it spins freely with your fingers, if it does, all ok, also visually look at the blades for damage and wear.

symtoms are


at any speed if i plant the foot it sort of starts to choke and blow a lot of black smoke






thanks for the replay but im no mechanic and have it at a place on the coast being repaired


thinking i might just go new as i plan on keeping the car for a few years yet and dont want to get stuck somewhere because i screwed it up


any idea what the part number is or a good place to purchase the correct part from?

This is a typical symptom of a delaminating turbo hose.

I'm definitely not an expert, but the previous owner of my TD5 has warned me about a sticking turbo waste gate and that I should lube it ever 2-3 weeks.

Searching on forums shows its a common problem that can be freed up.
Worth looking into before shelling out a couple of grand.

so the turbo needs a rebuild and thats getting done, but i need to get the three gaskets


any idea of a part numbers ?

I have a good working order second hand turbo that I've just pulled off my Discovery to fit a VNT if you are interested.

turbo to maifold
turbo exhaust outlet


any ideas where i can purchase?

I thought it was in at a workshop getting repaired?

If so...
If its a Land Rover specialist, then i'd thought they would have a box of the metal gaskets.
If not, then any Land Rover parts seller would have them, Rovacraft as one example.

The big one turbo to exhaust, ESR 3737 widely used on not just TD5.
Small one, ERR6768 manifold to turbo.
