    Some RAN nostalgia.

    Just some random film, distant memories.

    I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

    A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

    FIRE! a sailors nightmare. A USN DDG had a major fire in No 1 fire room, in 1990. One Officer killed, 20 sailors injured, reported diseases later from asbestos. Apparently caused by a leak under pressure from fuel filters, causing atomised fuel to ignite. The RAN had a similar fire, not sure which DDG, think it was the Hobart. When swapping fuel filters, if the filter covers aren't tightened sufficiently, you will get a stream of atomised fuel impacting on steam lines. Hobart's fire was in the aft fire room, luckily the crew put it out quickly.

    The Forrestal fire, Vietnam, 1967. Hobart was operating on the gun line, when word came the big carrier was on fire. Hobart transferred her medical Officer, Surgeon LT. Leo Barnett, RAN, by helicopter to Forrestal, he was the first outside medical help to arrive. Hobart and USS Chandler immediately went to Forrestal, and transferred fire fighting equipment and medical supplies. The men of Forrestal fought like tigers to put the fire out, many of them died.

    Thanks Bob
    Remember watching the Forrestal fire a few times as a training film during aircraft weapons training. Starting to feel old now!

    Talk to a young sailor today, you feel as though we served in a different century. Hang on, we did.........this is interesting, when they get to the bit where they can demonstrate the effect of the sea pressure down deep, like at 600 feet they would tie a piece of string across the control room, as they surfaced, it would break. Then there's the coins..

    First the old, now the new. The much maligned Collins class. Now regarded as the most capable conventional submarine going around. If only we could man them.

    Not our finest hour, the Melbourne Voyager collision. My mate was a stoker on Voyager, thankfully the stokers mess was right aft, 3 Quebec, from memory. He was thrown out of his bunk, his locker opened, his gear thrown out. Whilst his mates were getting out fast, he was carefully folding his kit and placing it back in his locker. Until he was told in no uncertain terms to get out.

    CPO. J. Rogers story is here;
