Dear all!
To be honest, I've got the correct driving technique, I understand why there is so much backlash in the TX case and drive train, and I love Land Rovers, all the ingredients you need to own one. BUT it drives me crackers!!!!!
So 2.5 questions:
1. Should I get the Transfer case shimmed etc and work outwards to remove backlash? Or just put up with it......
and.....
2. If I do go ahead, who are people recommending to do the job? and what additional mods to the center diff/gearbox extension shaft should I consider?
and a final supplementary: What should I expect to pay? (If people are willing to share their outlay!)
I live near Tamworth NSW, so I'd rather get it done winthin at least 6 hours drive radius!

From other peoples experience, the problems with backlash in the TX case's has been the lack of shims installed from new.
Any helical cut gear has a certain amount of side loading when under load, if the direction is changed(ie from engine driving, to the axle driving the engine), then each gear without the proper shimming, will travel to either side making the familiar clunk!
A single gear won't be noticed so much, but if each part of your drive line has some movement, it adds up to a lot!
The center diff also has a lot of free play I believe, hence why I'm interested in looking at this at the same time, and various people have had success with units/mods from Ashcroft etc.
Chuck an Ashcroft ATB centre diff in it. That will get rid of the problem for good.
If you've got the cash, do the front and rear diffs at the same time.
Apparetnly 4wd Industries in Maitland sell and install Ashcroft gear. I've got no experience with them though.
Shims are not the issue so much as a combination of clutch centre, centre differential ' lash', axle spline and flange wear and drive coupling between trans and transfer case spline wear. As also mentioned toss that centre diff and fit an ashcroft ATB to it. Heaps of improvement right there.

						I live in Wauchope not to far from you we fit Ashcroft gear etc but we won't sell you stuff you don't need come and drive my defender and I am sure you will be more than impressed
