    SDV6 primary turbo gasket..body off??

    D4,3.0, 2010.

A smoke test was done and the whistle is coming from the gasket between the primary turbo and exhaust manifold, on the left side of the engine bay. The gasket isn't going to cost much but I'm told in order to change it the body needs to come off - 9.6 hours effort.

Does the body really need to come off?
OK to drive around if it can't be done straight away? Pretty sure it is....

    Cheers

Recent story claiming turbos can be done once egr plumbing removed as an alternative. Others will confirm but Rovertech Perth doing this way.

I have a hissing induction noise since having a sump off to fix the oil monitoring system. At the same time it went to the panel shop to fix the roo damage to the RH front guard sustained in Exmouth.
Need to get it back to the dealer and panel shop to investigate. It mainly happens when cold, when is your noise worst?

Yeah can hear it more when cold. But cold or hot can reproduce it without load, that is, disco in park and a quick but firm bleep of the acc..when the engine starts spinning up the sound is heard.

I don't like it. I like silence but am going to shop around for a quote.

I just had my turbos replaced with body on by removing the EGRs. One week later on a trip to Shark Bay over the last 2 weeks and a loud hissing and whistling sound started coming from the left side. Rovertech have just confirmed that it is the new turbo to dump pipe gasket and are having to replace it under warranty. Now relatively easy access because the EGR has been removed.

I initially had a problem with the engine light coming on but they fixed that finally after many hours of fault finding. Apparently it was a broken wire on the wiring loom but it only happened after removing the EGR system and installing an emulator. No engine light on the trip to Shark bay towing my 2.2t Kimberley Karavan. Just the very loud hissing / whistling sound under load after I reached about Geraldton on the way up.

    G'day Bob
I assume you have a 2.7 D4. How many km on your 2.7 when turbos needed replacing? Do you know what was worn? Thanks

    See my signature, 3.0l TDV6 D4 2010 (equivalent to SDV6).

230,000km, whistling noise from manifolds and suspect faulty turbos but still working OK. Been the same for about 10,000km.

From factory, no gaskets on manifolds or turbo to dump pipes and all leaking. Both manifolds were warped, especially the left side, which had a broken stud at the worst leak area. Both turbos had bent over inlet side turbine blades as if something had hit them, but not much bearing wear from what I gather. I saw them and checked for play but couldn't detect any.

It would probably only be worth removing the EGR's for future ease of maintenance and if you don't want EGR's. It will probably cost as much as removing the body if they do it in 9.5 hours. Just the EGR emulation and CPU changes were around $1000 without the removal cost of the EGR and it is illegal as I understand it.
