I'm Going fishing for Barra in Hazelwood

To fish for Barra in Vic' Hazelwood pondage by boat you require a permit. only 20 boats are allowed per day. To get a permit to boat fish you nneed to enter a Ballot. I received a phone call today from Fisheries to say my requested day was not avialable but If I would like to choose anther day in Feb, lots of weekdays days were available. So we got a permit for Thursday 8th Feb. midnight to midnight. So I will be going fishing

    Cheers, Mario

Ok, as an ex Valley Rat and local of that area for many years (used to cycle to the Pondage as a kid with my mates to catch the carp for fun), just a few pointers about the area and the Pondage Mario -

Don't drink the water - you'll see why when you get there.
Don't drive through Churchill to get there - those folk aren't used to Range Rovers driving through town...
If you do drive through Churchill - lock your doors...
Padlock your boat trailer to the car if you want to take your boat home again that night.
Try not to inhale too deeply if there is an Easterly blowing - again, you'll know why if this happens.

    Have fun.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

Thanks mate for the insight , but if I see any guys on porches playing banjos and telling their mates to squeal like a pig, then I'm doing a U turn and coming home.

    The day finally came

Thursday the 9th Feb, was the day fisheries had allocated me to take our boat on Hazelwood in the Ballot system. Wouldn't you know it, Wed arvo Rangieman rings to say he can't make it , his foot got busted at work so we lost out head landing net man..
3.am rolled up and it was blowing a gale at home, my neighbor was up and rearing to go. i had second thoughts about towing the boat the 139kms to Hazelwwod in this wind and forecast 38deg day on a waterway that is over 30 degs water temp.
But we persevered and once we got past Warrigal the wind eased. So it might be fishable. We arrived at Hazelwood in the dark before daybreak, a few boats were out on it doing the night shift. We waited until daybreak to launch, having never been here before we watched another guinea pig launch their boat first into the muddy water only to hear there outboard skeg go gindinding on the rocks at the end of the Ramp. So we laiunched with out O.B leg up.
So we launched and went fishing, we trolled our lures the length and breath of the lake, we saw fish on the sounder, we stop over them cast lures, we sent out soft plastics , we used surface poppers, we tried everything for Zilch.
There are no fishing and no boating zones on the lake, this is were the fish are, out of reach, even though some risked it and entered the no go zones and they caugt the odd fish. by 10.30 it was hot , 38 I believe was the tempo, we had enough of this cess pool and packed it in, vowing never to return there ever again. The boat came out coated with stick slime. The day was still young, so we opted to drive to Blue Rock dam, in hope of picking up some Bass and trout, it was only about 40 mins awy, so down the windy roads towing the boat we finally got to the lake. Our hearts sank as the wind had now picked up and white caps were now on the lake. The ramp is only shallow and dirt, so with the wind increasing we called it a day. Counter lunch was on the menu. so off to Trafalgar pub for one we opted. We only got there 40 mins too early and they would not take lunch orders until 12pm, so we sank a couple of beers and waited. At 12.02 off to order our meals, the young girl looked at the clock to make sure it was 12pm, must be some sort of strict rule that it has to be exactly 12pm or after before they can take out the order pad. Akin to Mc Donalds not selling a big mac before 10.am as the break fast menu boards on the wall are still displayed, and until the bill board changes they cant take an order. must be something about the gremlins coming out to eat them up or worse. Some are so Anal about rules.
After having the meal we headed home pretty buggered , but will definitely go back and have a crack at Blue rock one day.
    There no comparison.
