Legal or illegal - what's your opinion?

I am setting up the gps/laptop in the Discovery. The software that I will be running is Oziexplorer.

The maps that I would like to use, at this stage is the Natmap Raster 250k series. These are available as a 4 CD set @ $99 or as a 2 DVD set @ $120.

The maps are available FREE Of COST if you download them from Geoscience Australia. The whole 513 maps are available.

My question is...would it be illegal to copy the CD or DVD set even though they are free to download?

    Cheers,
    Lyndon.

From what I understand, the maps on the DVD are newer, and of higher quality than the ones that are on the CD, or downloadable.

Geoscience Australia is the site for the raster maps.

You click on the free downloads section and that takes you to a search page. If you select 'Topography' and then 'define an area', that will show a map of Aussie with the maps. The only problem is the sections are SE, SF, SG and so on...BUT in each section there up to 16 or 20 maps. You work it out as each maps is about 2.5mb and then download...you will be there forever!!!! You also have to register but this only sends the 'License Agreement' to you, it will give you the link to then download your maps.

You can select a part of the country and then it will give you all the maps for it, but you still have to download heaps.

    Cheers,
    Lyndon.

to the letter of the law, certainly is illegal.

the dvd maps are much better quality than the downloadable ones from what i have seen.

if you can afford a gps you should be able to afford the maps... 8O

Copying copyright software is illegal, and it's theft. Don't try to dress it up as anything else.

Who gets hurt? Two parties; the producer of the maps, who loses income due to theft, and everyone else who ends up with higher-priced maps and less choice as there is less incentive to produce anything.

Just go and buy what you need.
