D500 is the root of all Evil

I have to fess up.

I have not shot a single frame of 35mm or 120 since buying the D500. That's about 7 months.

Even over the Christmas break, I took my film gear with me and only shot the D500.



For the last month and a half, I've been TRYING to get out, to motivate myself and just nothing.

I think the D500 has corrupted me.

D800E did that to me .. twice!

First time, was seeing those impressive 36Mp files. All that unecessary detail, yet a joy to behold.

Then again, just over a year ago.
The little 10pin port collapsed in on itself! Arggh.
I can't go out without my GPS attachment, and without that 10pin port, no GPS .. and hence zero motivation.
I botched my poxy (epoxy)repair! .. so took it into a place to get it done properly.
I reckon I've held the camera once or twice since Feb last year.
Actually, I don't blame the D800E for the current lack of motivation, I blame Nikon and their 101% pathetic customer support!

I think my (current) lack of motivation comes down to the resignation that I've been looking for an escape clause from the Nikon shackles I've been bound too for the past few decades .. and the depressing realisation that there is really no alternative path.

Fun toy aren't they

I still swing back to my D750 body in low light if i don't need to extra reach or speed of the D500, but otherwise..... it's been my go to toy since I bought mine.

A couple of days ago I get a notification in my browser *again* to update the firmware on the D500.
Then another for camera control pro 2
Then ANOTHER for view NX-I

I think this is the 3rd update in about as many months from Nikon.

Either they are releasing really buggy software, or they are trying really hard to improve their software quality.

Perhaps a bit of both, but to be brutally honest, recently the nikon transfer app and the view nx-i or capture nxd or nx2 or whatever the app is called these days doesn't recognize the D500 when plugged in, so it's card out, into card reader, open app.. blah blah blah...

feels like going 5 steps backward and only 2 forward. < see what I did there? uhuh. That's how Nikon engineer their software..... in reverse.

firmware updates(ie. for cameras) are rare .. maybe one if you're lucky two, with added features rather than bug fixes.
Recently tho, considering all the troubles Nikon have been having with their products, they have been releasing more camera firmware updates than they 'used too'

On the software front tho, they update them all the time.
For every new camera model, they release an updated software version of their current software too.

Nikon are due to release at least 3 new models before the year is out, so expect more software updates for each camera.

Very occasionally they do add some new or updated feature to the software too, but it's very rare for them to just update the software without any need to do so if no new camera is released.

I find it's best to turn off any of the annoying Nikon update notifications immediately after installing their software .. in fact, better yet ... uninstall Nikon update.

The other reason for more firmware updates to cameras now days - is the built in functionality to talk to various Apps.

The most recent D500 update (firmware 1.13) listed the changes as:

• Fixed an issue that interfered with pairing or resulted in unreliable connections when the camera was used with the Android edition of the SnapBridge app.

No doubt there were probably other undisclosed changes - there normally are, but it appears this one was primarily driven by Snapbridge.

If you follow the "nikon" pdf on how-to spanbridge, you'll never get your devices to pair. it's a bloody joke.
Thankfully, I have no desire to shoot instagram jpegs.

Totally agree.... but it is still one of the reasons for more firmware updates
