It is a common problem
I have done away with the originals altogether with the following Kit:
Land Rover Defender 110 GL1003 Rear Mudflap Bracket kit Mudshield Quick Release | eBay
One of my rear mud flaps came off today - 2010 Puma 110. The piece of bodywork that the bracket bolts to has just torn off, with the bolt still in it.
Has anyone removed their Defender mud flaps altogether? Regardless of legality... the 90 ones look good, the 110 ones look a bit pants in my opinion, but i'm wondering how much of a nuisance this might become with mud and sand etc being thrown everywhere?
Cheers, Sam

One of mine was torn off when I backed into a sandhill. I bought a replacement generic arm and flap from eBay for about half the original price, which does the job.
They work well to control rock spray while touring, which is my need.
I'm keeping mine.
Neither of my 110s have them now, the body mounts just don't last. I have recently fitted gal brackets intended for a 90 to my County's cross member for legal purposes. The mud and silt sprayed up was never much of a problem as I would spend an hour under the vehicle after every filthy trip.
Thanks guys, good intel - the eBay kit looks nice actually, i'll consider. It looks like they don't use the original body mount hole? (which obviously i don't now have)
Thanks
(also sounds like its not just me had this problem... another quirk!)
My old 110 had them mounted on the rear cross member

I've still got the originals fitted on the Defender but did pop rivet a piece of ally right angle in where the flap fits to the body. Much better than the stupid way LR fitted it. The other side (R/H) is OK as the flap is attached to the extra tank in the space between the body and chassis.
AlanH.
PS. Actually I've just fitted Defender flaps to the D4 at the rear and they look rather good. :-))
