SubscriberI am refitting my cyl head to my 2.25 engine and following the Land Rover Manual.
Operation A1-22 states to smear the head gasket surfaces both sides with engine oil (copper gasket)
What are peoples views on doing this?
In any other engines I have done over the years, lots of years, the gasket and surfaces were always clean and dry.
Why does Land Rover request this and has anyone had problems with oiling the gasket?

I personally use hylomar spray on my copper head gasket to help seal the surfaces and take up any inconsistencies in the surfaces. Used to use copperkote or even silver paint but that was a lead based paint and is no longer available. Good luck with ur engine.

Any reason you are fitting the copper gasket instead of the composite one? Just asking as I'm about to put the head on my SIII.

SupporterX 3 Hylomar spray.
Copper gasket conducts heat between the head and block reducing hot spots which can cause the head to crack between cylinders 2 & 3.
Common on series 2 heads as they had a thinner casting.

Almost certainly only on engines where the head has been skimmed. It should not be an issue, even if the head has been skimmed, on later heads (with the boss on top of the head behind the carburettor).

Subscriberdecided to go with dry gasket.
Made up some bolt guides to guide the head into place and hold the gasket. (the engine is out of the car, so this is easy)
now off to drop it on.
