Synthetic winch rope.

Hello,

Just after some input.

I was thinking about putting synthetic rope on the winch I'm having fitted on Monday.

Now I'm told that synthetic rope can't handle too much heat, so as long as the winch brake is not used too much then there shouldn't be a problem.

I'm interested to find out from anyone if they've had much call to lower their cars down slopes using the winch.

I can't think of any circumstance around here where that would be necessary, but I need to consider the wider picture.

No problems with mine, 2 lowering jobs and many recoveries (no not my vehicle - only had to self recover twice!)

The secret is to pulse the winch, winch, pause, winch, pause etc.....

BTW - What winch you looking at? Depending on yourt choice I have sopme rope for sale.

I havn't done any lowering but the rope is worth it. Used mine on sunday at ACE's barbique to winch myself up and then winch a rangie up after me. The others made it with lots of loud peddle.

You fit more rope than cable and if it does snap it's not so violent. It's also nicer on the hands so you don't need gloves 8)

Part 1 - Definately!

Part 2 - Ever had it run through your hands, synthetic rope burns a be-atch...

But yes, nowhere near as bad as wire rope!

Sunday was the second time I have done a rescue so no never had it run through my hand. First time I used my tree protector, shackles and snatch block.

How much does a replacement synthetic rope "kit" cost? I've seen them advertised in the LRO magazine, but didn't know if was available here.

I've got a Warn XD9000i if that makes any difference.

It costs about $12 a metre.

Rather Expensive!

40 Metres = nearly $500.... not sure if that is a good deal.

Is it 'fragile' if you start winching with the rope rubbing over rocks etc? Do you need to protect it from rubbing?

Yeah, It's more expensive than wire I think, and I think it is subject to abrasion, but that's easy to overcome.

The benefits for me are weight and the fact that it won't rust like just about everything else does here. Also it's safer.
