    How hard would it be??

What would be involved in swapping a later model power steering box into an early Rangie with the 3 bolt box.

We are into the "I think you will find" territory here ie I am not sure, but I think you will find that the thing will bolt up to the steering shaft and the mount to the chassis.
If you get a four bolt for a 92-93 then the pitman arm will be OK.
The biggest problem will be that the pipe unions on a 4 bolt are metric (I think, certainly the brakes are) , so you will have to have new pipes made up. The pumps are different but if you have custom pipes made up you can wing it.

Even the 4bolt box from 86' uses different fittings so as long as you get the hoses as well should be ok.

So is a 4 bolt from a late model?

    We have 2 Rangies:

    79 (mine) has 3 bolt
    80 (hers) has 4 bolt

All the pipes/fittings look like they will line up.
Surely the 80 couldn't be metric - could it?

Yep, the 4 bolt was fitted from 86 on, maybe even late 85 - who knows with l/rover. Both my 81 and 85 have 3 bolt boxes.

    I doesn't leak 8)

I believe the 3 bolt box is bigger than the 4 bolt and gives problems when fitting a TDi300.

is there a difference in the ratios?
At slow speed the steering in my 80 is very light and direct and the turning circle is smaller than the 93 which is horrible at walking speed
