Roof rack help for Disco TD5 2003

    Hi folks,
I am looking at putting on a roof rack as I'm about to go sea kayaking.
The question i have: is the official roof load limit for the disco 50kg?
if so, how can i fit two kayaks (plus the rack) on top without going over?
i have ogled the Opposite Lock rack, that can have a million and one attachments added to it as it would be able to serve as both a kayak holder and then for off-road trips could carry swag, spare tyre, gas bottle etc.
the problem is the weight of the rack (about 22kg from memory) plus the two kayaks comes to 70-75 kg.
any suggestions would be much appreciated!
    cheers,
    Juz

Is that limit for the factory roof rails or the factory roof rack?
    Cheers

    Hi slunnie,
that is another good question! i have the standard rails fitted to the front half of the roof, but don't think they will hold the kayaks.
i would love somebody to set me straight on the actual roof load capacity.
    cheers,
    Juz

    TD5 Discovery max roof load.

Hello Juz, I have only ever been able to find the 50kg on road/30kg off
road limits in the hand book and nothing to indicate that it is another
limit. Maybe a call to LRA is in order. Most roof racks availble would be close
to max offroad without a load. You are going to be caring at least 100kg.

You might like to have a look at www.greylandy.com who went down
a similar path but with a Defender and a Hannibal rack.

    G'day from Malaysia .

From Land Rover Discovery Accessory cataloque , the 50kg load limit capacity is allowed on top of their roof carrying accessories such rail extention , load bar , safari rack , etc .

If you are still concern , get an aluminium rack .

Imagine those roof tent , weighing around 50kg (without occupant ), and the roof still did not cave in .

I think that the issue of maximum roof loadings has more to do with the stablity of the vehicle with a raised centre of gravity than with the structural capacity of the the rack or roof structure.

Having said that then a number of factors come in to play like spring lifts, larger tyres, spring and shock absorbers, road conditions, cross winds etc

The advice given by land Rover is bound to be conservative but how far the limits can be stretched is a matter of conjecture.

I have exceeded these limits on a few occasions without issue.

    Hi Justin,

If the rack is mounted on the gutter you should be able to at least carry 150kg without issue. See the picture below, these guys did a 50,000km trip around the world in a couple of D2's with a Hannibal rack, rooftent and jerry cans on the roof.

I recently fitted an ARB rack to my 2000 Disco, it attaches to the gutters and is very strong. Not sure how much weight I could put on it but I am guessing at least 100kg.
