Notes on a new Tdi Alternator.
After 265K kilometers, my alternator's bearings finally died. Here are some tips to make replacment a bit easier.
I found one at Coopers at Tempe - $478. (PN AMR 4248) - very hard to find a reco one, the diesel version is slightly different to V8.
First thing is that the pulley is EIGHT grooves ( 1 extra), and has a diameter of 70mm ( +10mm)
Provided you run the belt lined up ( ie flush with rear of pulley) no problems. As to the bigger diameter if your belt is slightly worn, then the slack taken up by the tensioner will be used up and it will be like fitting a new belt. Or you may need a bigger belt. The standard Tdi size is 1150mm. The 7v poly belt is common, but go to a place like CBC bearings.
The tacho will read a simdgin low, but compared to changing pulleys, I can live with that.

Coopers alternator, although made by Magnet Marelli, isn't exactly the LR part. ( I presume it's a generic A127 type).

The lower mounting is threaded, and you need to drill it out ( 8mm). Don't try to just bolt it in, there is a high possibility of cross threading or breaking somthing.

Don't worry if the upper mount is loose when first fitted - the adjustor sleeve at the rear of the mount slides in when tightened up.
Swap the tacho feed connector over ( unbolts ) and notice the different position of the connectors in general. My Tdi wiring has sufficent slack to accomodate the different position.
And hey presto - a quiet alternator.
