Single DIN Head unit in S2 Disco

    Hi there,

Has anyone here managed to install a single DIN head unit into a Series II disco? If so, what did you do to get it to fit nicely.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Cheers

I really do not understand the question.
A DIN opening is a standard size, thats why its DIN.
ANY DIN stereo wil fit. Just watch the depth, but they are mostly the same.

Remove the original mounting bracket which is the thing still in the hole and fit the one for the new unit, by bending the tangs over. Every new unit will come with a fascia trim that fits around the hole to cover it. You may have to neatly trim the surround , if it is too big.

The hardest job is to cut and crimp the various wires.
suggest you get the wiring diagram colours, then write them on the equivalents on the installation sheet of the new unit.
I did this last week to my wife's Mazda where I fitted a Pioneer single disc unit.

Dont cut and crimp, its not necessary.

Discos have an ISO std plug arrangement. So for whatever head unit you decide to fit buy a $15.00 Aerpro harness to suit...

Eg: Pioneer to ISO, Alpine to ISO etc...

This makes the installation plug and play (pray?)

    Hey thanks for your reply!

Sorry if my question was confusing. Just looking at the CD player in the disco (series 2), it doesnt look to me to be standard DIN sizing. To me it looks far taller than a standard single DIN stereo. If this is not the case then that makes things much easier for me! Ill check it out when i get home tonight.

As for the blown bulbs and cd jamming, thats 1/2 the reason im replacing too! Exactly the same. No lights on any of the buttons, and 1/2 the display is gone! Ive also got a pioneer mp3 unit sitting around.

And as for a pioneer -> iso plug, this could be a beautiful thing!

    Cheers for your replies guys,

    Hey seqfisho,

What speakers did you use when you upgraded the head unit, as the factory ones are useless.???

I have a nice set of 6x9's but I didn't want to cut up the factory interior to install them.

Any one else have any ideas/examples of speaker upgrades.??

    Cheers

I'm still running the factory units ATM

When I got my head unit I inquired with the shop and the guy showed me some nice 4" models that he said would perform well as I expressed that I didnt want to cut up the doors/trim, but I dont remember to brand or price ops:

Doesn't make much difference ATM as I cant hear the radio over the missus and child 8O

Don't think I've ever heard 4" speakers, any price or brand, that didn't sound like cr*p.

I have found that the Jaycar 6inch round (not Response but next one down)are good ,mated to a Jaycar 84Wx2 amp under the seat.
In a 92 Rangie there are cutouts for premium speakers in the back of the door bottoms at the front.
I was able to cut out the blanks and put the Jaycars there. I had already fitted a pair of Jaycar 4inch in the original position at the top front of each door and I linked the speakers via a capacitior to use the 4inch as tweeters.
There is very limted room for the magnets in a Rangie at the top, so you need speakers with small magnets. I assume a Disco1 at least is probably the same.
If you have the premium sound you should not need speakers and if you don't then there must be blanks all over the place for additional speakers. Just have a look at the top model and see where the speakers go.
While I do not have killer base the detail and accuracy of my setup is excellent.
PS I used to be Sanyo In Car Entertainment Manager in the early 80s and have been on several listening panels for home and car sound.
    regards Philip A
