My Disco3 is 20km away, so going from memory here.
You should have 2 long strips of alloy covering up the rails, with 4 or 5 plastic plugs in those strips.
The plastic plugs push into threaded mounts in the roof - if you lever them up, they pull out - or they may need some help to get them out by unscrewing them from the holes.
If you pull all the plugs out, you can lift out the alloy rail covers (and clean the crap out under them!).
I fitted Rhino rack rails to my D3, and it was quite painless once the plugs came out.
More info here, and photos of mine in post 25

Powerful UK have lots of useful videos relating to adding/installing items to Land rovers. This link is for the video relating to roof rails which may be of use to you. I certainly watched it a few times when fitting my short rails. I agree with Aussie Jeepsters' above comment about spinning the plastic plugs out of the original roof channel strips, it made getting them out easier. The plastic/rubber layer covering these channel covers was easily damaged, so I took care when levering these christmas tree plugs out as I may want to replace the channel covers one day.

And always recut the threads with a tap as they are inevitably gummed up with sealer or something. You'll need to be able to get the bolts/screws to engage fully.
