    Blown Engine Options - TDV6 MY08 D3

After owning our D3 from new (MY08 SE) and covering just on 220,000km the TDV6 engine has recently destroyed itself. The pulley on the oil pump failed, belt slipped and no more forward motion.

Car has been serviced religiously at specialists in Brisbane, but I am now in a quandary with what to do with the car.

Seems like the Territory engine is the only practical option, but I've been given estimates of around $12-14k +/- to do this. Not a small amount of money. I see you can buy a brand new crate motor on eBay for $8K - has anyone bought one of these? Anyone know of a cheaper new option? Otherwise it's wait and see what comes up from wreckers, but they come with a lot of unknowns for not a lot less.

I'm really weighing up fixing the car and wearing the cost, or walking away from it as is.

What would it be worth as is? A few months ago we'd just had the transmission fully rebuilt, so have recently sunk about $10K fixing this, new steering rack and LCA etc. Just not sure I can keep throwing money at it.

    Looking at the positives
If I replace the engine I'd end up with a D3 with 0 km on engine, and a fully rebuilt transmission. This should give another 10+ years of motoring. Would it be worth anymore than a D3 with similar km's though? I'd hope so, but not sure.

Downside is I could sink a lot of $ into the car, and it not worth anymore than what I'm about to spend on it.

Would appreciate any input, or hear from people who have done the transplant and what the cost turned out.

We have another Disco, so won't be without a LR.

    Hi Justin.

Sorry to hear this has happened. At least there are positive stories on the forum about success in replacing the engine so that's encouraging.

I suppose it boils down to whether you see the money you've already spent and would have to spend as similar to buying a "new" second hand car. You know it's history already and as you've said it would be like starting from scratch with a new engine so hopefully a long while before any other problems are likely crop up. You could buy another vehicle and have the same sort of issues you've had again. At least with the existing one you know the major components are new. The only caveat would be, are there any other components that are known to be at risk and would the engine failing have compromised the new transmission.

Hard call to make and I can fully understand the sense of pouring good money after bad. The last car I had (Pajero NM) cost me about $8500 in the last year. I had a gearbox die and all that was available was a 2nd hand unit. Couldn't get a new one or a reconditioned one. The upside was that it pushed me to buy a new D4 HSE, silver lining to the cloud at the time. But, it sure hurt knowing I'd virtually thrown the repair money away. Only got $5000 trade as it was a petrol model with a lot of mileage.

Hope it all turns out well.

Very unfortunate but at least the cause is known regarding the oil pump housing which I assume they did not update on yours when the timing belt was done?

Triumph Spares have so many wrecked Discos I can't imagine there is a fair choice there?

Initially low km Territory engines were abundant and cheap. What happened?

Been talking to a Tasmanian on another forum with a 07 D3 - that has just done his belts but did not do the oil pump - he says his local Tassie indies have never seen any failure (he should have seen Justin) so did not do the oil pump.

He might be lucky. I did not risk it when I had my belts done in May I forked out the $170 a new oil pump and my indie was in full agreement.

$170 v $10,000 I'd take that bet any day and I had to force my guy to change it also.

Not an easy decision but do not confuse what the vehicle is worth in $ with what the vehicle is worth to you.
A 12k fix is far cheaper than than a new vehicle & considering what you have already spent, you have lots of new bits on the vehicle already.
Adding a new engine completes all the expensive bit replacement.

Like you said, with a new engine, it should be good for another 10 years.
    Good luck with your decision.

This is where I bought my Territory engine. I can personally vouch for this guy, he's legit. $12-14k is ridiculous, its a 2 day job in a workshop. Crate motors are 8k from rovacraft afaik. Link to my thread on doing the replacement is in my signature.

Feel free to PM me for my number if you want to call for a chat.
