Puma cruising in 6th gear?

Hi guys,

Today drove to Melbourne with the family and thought about this whilst driving.
Someone told me the MT82 does not like being pushed in 6th gear under load.
Now i know some pre 2010 boxes had some issues but was under the impression this was rectified.
I roll on 33s and to do 110kph in 5th up a hill is difficult as im sitting near on 3000rpm. It would be even worse on 32s.
As a result i sit on 110-115kph in 6th the whole way. I dont see how this could be bad for the box. Maybe if i was towing and close to max gvm but not with the family onboard and probably 2.5 ton all up.

Anyone have any info on this?
Anyone blown a post 2010 box??
If a mustang can hammer 6th gear with a chinese version of the same box how is it a defender cant?

Seems not all mt82 are the same either. Got a 130 2008 model that has done 220k now and gets a pounding in our hilly parts of tas. He says he now spends more time in 6th since the remap and he doesn't spare the horses 😎. In all of our customer base of deafeners not 1 trans issue yet. We DO insist on changing the oil in it at 60k max and only use BOT328....

Im the same in terms of my remap. I leave it in 6th on the higway all the time, i never downshift

I was told to never tow in 6th? I have driven up to Coffs and down to Wangaratta towing cars in 6th and haven't had any issues apart from towing an empty trailer 1000km and now i have a leaky transfer case input shaft.

Apparently all the new aschroft output shafts have been modified to stop leaking?

Ive seen the ashcroft ones leak most probably a fitting issue. The transfer case intermediate shaft and input seal is still an issue from the early lt230 days, seem worse in puma models is all.
I just refit new genuine coupling kits and pack them with moly grease.

I also find that the 2,4 Puma runs out of power at the 3000 rpm mark and the car is much happier a bit over 2000 rpm 6th gear which equates to a bit over 100 km/hr, Yes those pesky O rings, our transfer is leaking, enough to be annoying but not enough to require a top up on our last holiday where we covered 13,000kms.

On the intermediate shaft, has anyone tried Vitron O rings which are rated at a much higher temperature, or are they not suitable. I have noticed the OEM front O ring becomes hard to the point of being brittle (Hope I am not off topic)

Erich puma transfer leaks are NEVER off topic around here...😅

I guess a viton one woukd help as where you are it gets pretty hot!!!
Thec2.4 peak torque is well set for touring in top gear especially when remapped 😎

G'day all,

I have a 2011 2.4L Puma 110 wagon with BFG KO2's 235x85 16" tires.

My turbo was replaced last week and now (might be me) it feels/sound to be revving higher then usual.

At 70km/h in 5th its sitting just under 2000Rpm.

What are the rest of you guys getting with similar setup?
