    2 x 2 x 2 (inches that is)

    hi all,

    Having recently changed my tyres on the D4 to 265x65x18, i feel the vehicle is rec'd a minor lift. In comparison to the originals which i cant recall now the exact size am i right in assuming this has given me a approx 2inch lift from std tyres to these bigger ones. In selecting offroad mode this has given me great under carriage clearance of another 2inches? I have also ordered some rods (60mm) when fitted should provide another approx 2inch lift. are my calculations correct in assuming i can know have approx 6 inches more then previously or put another way;

std tyres, offroad mode, no rods = gave 2inch lift
bigger tyres, offroad mode, rods = gives 6 inch lift

D2's would drive around normal tarmac with 2inch lift no problems, can a D4 with rods set perm at 60mm (2inch) drive around tarmac ok, in my case with bigger tyres might mean a 4inch lift driving around tarmac = is this too much stress on vehicle, just questioning why most 4wd with 2-4inch lift can drive around tarmac and D4's tend to stand clear of bigger perm lifts. thx

    Bad news...

    Factory tyre is 30”
    Your new tyre is 31.5”
Half of that is at the top - so you have 3/4” extra “lift”

As for running rods all the time - it’s just running the CVs at a greater angle which does place a bit more stress on them...

And we stay clear of permanent lifts because we paid good money for air suspension, it’s what makes it more versatile, drive better, handle better etc than a fixed lift vehicle..

I'm getting to the age where size matters. I feel younger if I have my air bags a bit taller (20m) than default normal height. I'm know it's putting some more stress on the CV joints but I'm ok with that. I haven't seen many/any posts of people complaining about D3 /D4 CVs breaking. Instead of using rods, I do it via software using the Gap iidtool. This tool also gives you heaps of other things to monitor and understand about your truck. Multi purpose sound investment imo.

What rims are you using to fit 18" tyres?

In many cases D4's avoid permanent lifts because you can have the best of both worlds.... with Llams, which is my preference over rods, I can get that extra hight when I need it off road.... and I can drop the vehicle significantly lower for city car parks or to help my 85yo dad into the car...... couldn't do that with my lifted D2.

Also most of the 4WD's getting around with a full time large lift are not fully independent suspension.... A lifted D2 puts extra pressure on the drive shaft unis.... same thing with the CV's in a D4.

I agree with Tombie, the air suspension on a D4 is a massive plus - lifting it permanently is a backward step. Rods, Llams or an IID tool are all easy effective ways of lifting when you need it rather than all the time...

I bought a GAP tool as well mainly for this reason. My wife's disabled and has trouble getting into and out of the D4. I now use the GAP tool to drop the car to bump stops. Amazing how low the car gets when you do that. Obviously, I don't drive around like that and would move at most a few metres when getting to where I want to drop her off. Usually have it in access height before that, then select bump stops. Two clicks and you're done after previously having opened the tool and selecting the height setting.

    Shamirj,

Further to my earlier post, these two images give you an idea of the variation in height variation I have at the turn of a knob.

Low for the old folks and underground car parks....

    High enough ...

    AND....
It can still has the capacity to go into super extended mode above this if it bellies out off road...

    thanks to all

so if the bigger tyres don't give me an 2inch lift as noted, how about the air susp levels from normal height level to offroad is that an approx 2 inch lift + rods another 2 inch which means i can effectively gain 4 inch lift if required, then super extended is even more lift. funny the tyre size change is noticeable when i sit in the vehicle even though it did not gain 2 inches in height. Is 4 inches achievable and is my calculations correct?

Standard ride is now 3/4” higher.
Offroad is the *new* standard +2”
Add Rods and everything is another +2”
Super Extended will then go another +2”

    Therefore:

With Rods, tyres and in offroad mode you are 4 3/4” higher than standard or 2 3/4” higher than factory offroad mode.

To add to Tombie's post, at 4" above normal ride height your struts will be very close to topping out. Undulating tracks will bring continual bangs as the struts top out on the limit of their travel. Not to mention increased risk of CV issues etc...
