    Bubbling Paint Concern

    Hello All,
    I'm about to seal my roof with Sikaflex which has led me to addressing some bubbles on the roof, as well as other places. Firstly has anyone else had this issue? I imagine its not a typical Defender problem, and has been caused by 'rising damp' from sitting for long periods of time under my house on dirt that was obviously holding moisture for longer than I thought.

    Secondly, can anyone suggest my best approach to neutralising the problem? It's a 2002 TD5 130 with 53k on the clock so I'm looking at turning around my bad form and getting it out and about again, and not stripping it down for a respray.

    The roof spots (both sides) will be my first task. I'm thinking of sanding around the spots to bare metal, penetrol, apply my sikaflex, and then spraying with an aerosol primer. top coat. I guess if that goes well I'll continue on with that approach.

    I've seen the paint colour thread so I'm after Chawton White LR code 156. I think I found a website in Oz where I can source it. Has anybody found an autoshop or paint shop that carry it under a different code?

    P.S. The photos of the bonnet hinge shows about 20mm of bubbling at left of hinge.

    Hi I needed to do some paint repair on my my 99td5 . I went to the paint factory here in Melbourne . They suplyed everything i needed , and colour matched my paint . They got it spot on . The whole lot primer , thinners , hardener and top coat all came in under $ 200 . I think $190 Also it was a matalic Red . Do you have anything like that place around you , if so worth checking out ?     Thanks Jim. Looks like Paint Factory is a one off but I can certainly ask at my local paint shop, and others if need be. I know they've previously told me they can match house colours from a spec of paint. I may as well have a chat with an auto panel shop as well. I haven't got one at present that I trust but a chat about what has happened may be fruitful.

    I'm still trying to get my head around what exactly has happened.
    On a typical car if you had a problem you'd see rust, and you'd usually see why the rust started and the paint would be affected from there.

    As yet I haven't seen any evidence of oxidation in the 'non steel' panels but it looks like moisture has been absorbed into the panel, and I imagine come out the panel at possibly some other point, causing the paint to lift.

    Does that reasoning seem at all realistic?
    and if panel is dry and paint is reapplied is there any chance of anything nasty still going on in the metal?

    Bonnet hinge and vent flaps, no problem. Clean them up, replace vent pins with stainless and the bonnet hinge bolts with stainless bolts. Seperate with fiber washers and something like tefgel when using stainless through aluminium. Galvanised bolts better. Seperate the steel bonnet hinges from the aluminium bonnet skin with a gasket.

    Window frame hinge looks like it wasnt primed before paint and paint has just fallen off. Prime and paint it properly.

    Roof you might need to seperate the panels to clean up and reseal. Doesnt look too bad so Id probably just sand, seam seal and paint. Not sure whats happened there as it should be all aluminium. Maybe steel gutters?

    Thanks Manic. I'll start on the roof and see how I go.
    I went to my paint shop today and they didn't let me down
    Ending up finding the 2002 Chawton White was code 603, or NAL and there were 4 variations of Chawton White. So lucky I took a flake with me and didn't buy off the internet.
    Since my compressor died a few years ago I bought a spray can (and can of etch primer) and will see how I go.
