Remap, VNT and disco T/Case in Defender

Anyone with a Td5 defender running the disco 1.2 T/case?
Mainly interested if you have a VNT and Remap etc.

How good does it take off in first with a load?
I tow a 1.5T camper quite a lot so this is the main point of my query.

Hi Paul

I had this setup when I bought mine: BAS VNT, allisport intercooler, remapped ECU and a 1.2 high range ratio in the T-case. My truck has 315/75/16 wheels and 4.11 cw&P which brings it pretty close to a stock drivetrain ratio if you run the 1.4 T-case gear. My truck also weighs in at around 2.9t around town. I have to say, I hated the 1.2 ratio as it is virtually impossible to take off without slipping the clutch badly. I cannot remember how many times I stalled the engine in traffic for that reason. Needless to say, I went back to 1.4.

I hear what you are saying but why would it be any worse than reversing a Disco uphill?

I find the defender overgeared in reverse if you go to the 1.22 transfer case with defender tyres I figure it could only be worse

Still it’s not difficult to use low range once you get use to it

I guess I am just trying to find out why the manual Discoveries don't appear to have any issues with the 1.2 but there are some who find the 1.2 in the Defender too tall.

Weights are similar and the smaller factory tires on the Discos only account for a few percent in final gearing.

If you put even a 2 tonne trailer behind it and try to reverse up a slope you will find yourself grabbing for low range.
Not that this is a crisis
While it probably wont be much different the higher ratio disco transfer case wont help

I have the same car and taking your foot off the clutch slowly without touching the throttle is the way to go provided the load isnt too great
As soon as you touch the throttle the ECU takes over from what I will call the anti stall this is very noticeable
