Heading to Albany for a week. Any advice on spots to go?

    Hi All,

Just as the title says. Spending a week at Middleton Beach CP and keen to check out the area. What's good?

all the beaches are worth a poke around, the old whaling station, the war mormorial over looking the bay, the cenotaph, wander around town, the sat and sunday markets, fish and chips down the sqid shack, feed of the local oysters, whale watching town under sail, trip up the Kalgan river (a tour), that will keep ya busy for about a month.
    cheers

There's a brand new ANZAC museum/memorial/commemorative thingo on the hill that I hear is well worth a look, as mentioned by bblaze.

Then you've got West Cape Howe (most southerly point of WA) to the west, Denmark on an inlet, too. Heading west again, Walpole's Tree Top Walk, and Walpole on the inlet.
On the way down, it's worth swinging west off the Albany Hwy after Cranbrook to pick up the Red Gum Pass Rd and Stirling Range Drive through that range. Then the Chester Pass Rd south into Albany. The Porongurups are worth a look if you have time.

East of town is Waychinicup National Park, Cheyne Beach etc.

You'll probably get heaps of info at the local tourist centre.

How long are you down there, and what are your interests? You can easily fill 3 months poking around!
If at first you don't succeed, that's one data point. - xkcd

The old Whaling station is a must do. The Porongorup walk to the elevated platform is great. If you have time go up to the Stirling Ranges and climb Bluff Knoll. The view from the top is stunning. By the way, my time from the carpark to the top of Bluff Knoll and back again was 2 hours 8 minutes. Couldn't crack the 2 hour mark.

As all above have mentioned ( with the exception that the squid shack fish n chips are not what they used to be , Albany hwy ( opposite supercheap ) are the best fish n chips . a week is only enough to scratch the surface , but a good 4x4 1/2 day trip would be to follow the coastal track from near the windfarm through to mutton bird beach , along the beach exiting at camp Kennedy through to cosy corner then through to west cape howe , Shelly beach ( side tracks off to dingo and Bornholm beach if you're feeling adventurous , I see you have an ediff so you should be able to get out, if not I can snatch you out with a d2 ) . the lookouts from mutton bird ( my local ) and the hang gliding jump off at Shelley are awe inspiring , you'll probably want to move here if you spend too long down this way. Enjoy

Thanks for all the info. Will certainly do the whaling station and other things in town. Was keen on some good tracks and beaches to explore.

Agreed Brian, Esperance is fantastic, I spent a few years in Kalgoorlie so went regularly during that time and now regularly spend Easter with the outlaws at 'The Duke'. Only negative this year was watching- in embarrassment- a guy in a D4 get bogged on Big Whartons beach. Pulled out buy his mate in a LC....shame!

Thanks discorevy! That 1/2 day trip sounds great. Stop for lunch a swim and a SUP along the way, fantastic.
Yes, should be right to go most places, she's reasonably capable....for a D3 .

I know a week's not long enough but that's all work will allow ATM. Having said that, I'm sure I hold an unchecked winning lotto ticket so maybe I'll need more things to do.
