I have/had rec rego, now have no rego since moving to NSW! Sooo wish we had it up here.
I would advise all you off road riders to have your bikes on rec rego.I was unfortunate to have had a low speed accident resulting in an injury that required surgery. Because my bike has rec rego it has been covered by TAC.The other advise is it is important to make a statement to the police about the accident - the sooner the better. I have been riding motorcyles on and offroad for nearly 40 years and this has been my first injury that will have stopped from riding for a long period of time. I can not wait to get back on the bikes .

With a name like crash I would have thought it was a common occurrence.

That is why it is advisable to have your kids motorcycles registered (Rec or Full, Victoria) even if they are under-aged and hacking around the scrub.
This way they are covered by TAC in case of injury. Primary Producer rego (Victoria) on bikes used to be a bit tricky, as there was a given distance that you were allowed to be from your property, unless travelling between properties, however it may have changed by now.
My brother was out riding in the Sunset Country with a group of mates and one of the dills crashed into him, injuring his knee. The result was time off work and two episodes of surgery, all covered by TAC.
It's another good thing we have in Victoria.
Cheers, Mick.

Does this mean that the driver/passengers of an unregistered vehicle that has an accident (in Victoria) are not covered by TAC ?

Did a google search and found, :
All cyclists and pedestrians are covered by TAC.
It appears pedestrians, drivers, passengers in an unregistered vehicle are covered, but TAC may seek to recover payment made,
from the vehicle owner.
TAC also offer a NRV (non registered vehicle) insurance to cover for injury sustained on farm vehicles.
Who can claim with the TAC? - TAC - Transport Accident Commission
www.tac.vic.gov.au/what-to-do-after-an-accident/who-can-claim-with-the-tac
A claim can be made with the TAC if: A person is involved in an accident caused by the driving of a car, motorcycle, bus, train or tram; and; A person is injured or dies as a result of the accident. Pedestrians and cyclists injured in accidents caused by the driving of a car, motorcycle, bus, train or tram are covered by the TAC.
This article has a few interesting points.

Overall it looks like it can get very complicated.
