Permit to drive unregistered vehicle out of Victooria ??

    Gday All,

Does anyone know if you can get a permit to Drive an unregistered vehicle on Vic roads. I got one many years ago to drive from Darwin to Perth you just had to nominate your route and stick to it.

A mate is looking at 1 of the L/R on Greys and we might fly down and drive it back if we can do it. Might even look at 1 myself.

Anyone able to shed some light on it ??

    Thanks and Cheers Ean

Yes - very easy and can be done online in advance and your permit is emailed to you. I did it when I got my RRS - just need to drive by the direct reasonable route. When I got mine it was simple to drive from Melbourne to Canberra by the most reasonable route and the Vic permit was good for the NSW and ACT sections as well as the Vic section. I think WA does not recognise these permits and you need a WA permit for WA but your not headed that way.

So look on the Vic Roads website.

If you are going through SA...maybe Vic permit covers it, not sure. But the SA one was $42.50 for 3 days, nominating roads driven on, last time I got one, about 5yrs back.

Yep. The Vicroads permit is for trips originating in Victoria and covers you for your trip to your destination.

Their website is down for upgrades at the moment.

Nothing to it Ean and far easier than our northern states, no multi coloured slips or any of that NSW crap to worry about and unlike Qld Vic does recognise that there are actually drivers from other states. As stated earlier WA is the only '****** in the woodpile' (probably not PC to use this term nowadays, be interesting to see what the swear filter makes of it) that seems to run it's own race re permits, historic rego etc.

Easy to apply on line with the permit emailed to you, no dramas and the permit covers compulsory 3rd party liability.
