Auto Gearbox Temp

I have just purchased a D4 and will at times be towing a Caravan that weighs in around 3000KG. Last tow vehicle had the inbuilt ability to read transmission temp but cant find anything in the computer options for the D4.
What is the best/suitable aftermarket gauge for these vehicles.
While Im here how do you guys that tow use the auto when towing ie set and forget in D or lock in specific gear etc?

Our van is 2t and when using cruise control I do try to 'help' by manual shifting down.
Without cruise control it is fine in D.

Some recommend towing in sports mode to lessen the pain on the box. I tow a one tonne camper so don’t find that necessary. As for temp, you can purchase a tool and view it on your phone. But honestly, why? Would you know what temps it should be, what’s safe for it etc? The car will alert if the box is overheating, so I’d probably say just drive it, and regularly service the box as the most important thing.

What is the best/suitable aftermarket gauge for these vehicles.

A diagnostic tool with bluetooth, particularly the iiD BT by Gap. There's heaps of info in the forum on this topic that a search will turn up but basically you get an excellent fault reading/clearing tool that can also display live values of just about everything you'd ever want to monitor on your phone. It has other useful features too so well worth some research.

I use a 5 Channel welltempered gauge. Uses thermocouples, I’ve bolted to engine, transmission, transfer, front and rear diffs. Works well and accurate when compared with Gap tool. Have it in front of me on instrument panel so easy to read.

They used to be sold in the AULRO shop, no idea if they still do. I seem to remember they were made by a member. Do a search on AULRO for welltempered, there are a few threads on it. 🍻
