    D5 Sim Card Uses.

Just wondering if anyone has or knows exactly what the benefit / s of having a data SIM card loaded into the new D5, if it’s just to create to a wi-fi hotspot for the kids to rack up a bill you can’t jump over I might not bother, intrested if I should bother with it, or it’s more useful for our overseas cousins?

    thanks
    jack

Isn't it also used for emergency calls, sat nav, traffic etc? I thought it came with one for the first year which you could continue to use by subscription.

Maybe not for emergency calls, but for in-car apps, sat nav, live traffic etc.

    Sim card

No sim required for SOS or RoadSide Assistance or InControl Remote to work. Clearly it has another SIM hidden somewhere.

The Sim slot that we are talking about provides Google Maps Sat, News, and Hotspot for the passengers of the vehicle. TBH I cannot see a reason I would buy a sim for mine.

I have a SIM in mine and at this stage would not recommend it. The hotspot rarely works and Live never works.. ie weather, news. I am not 100% sure how it affects the NAV though.

    Post SIM CARD OPTIONS

I am wondering if there's a way to use the data off my phone rather than buy another SIM card
that I don't need while I have lots of data unused on my phone.

Even the cheapest SIM card options seem to be excessive for an annual subscription.

Are users experiencing good benefits when using the SIM for the D5?

At home my car connects to my WIFI network so at a guess it would be just as happy connecting to my phone WIFI hotspot and use the phone data plan instead of its own SIM card.

I think with the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto upgrades shortly there’s no need for the SIM any more.

Sat view in the nav, news, weather, etc. It also allows the use of the incontrol app for remote start, locking, car status (locked or not) and where you parked it last (assuming its not 6 storeys underground and out of range. The live features (web etc) can't be used while driving.

Data use is negligible as is the reason for having it in the first place. Sat view is handy sometimes as are the remote app functions but I find the infotainment system so unreliable I rarely use the sim enabled features.

The remote start, car status and locking/unlocking doesn’t require a SIM card, that works on mine and I haven’t got one (other than the one embedded in the vehicle).
