Is the squeal when the car is stationary or moving?
Scott
hi... i have an MY13 D4 HSE and for the past few months it's been giving off a squealing type noise when i MANUALLY release the handbrake... it's not a constant noise though.. it's kind of a squeal, stop, squeal stop type pattern etc.. and generally only when the car is warm after being driven, then parked and then i've gone out in it again. However if i put the car into gear and apply pedal and the car takes the brake off automatically, then it doesn't do it.
Mentioned it to my LR dealer who's saying (without looking at it) that possibly the module that controls the handbrake may need replacing. Any idea what that might cost?
With the wealth of knowledge on this site, does anyone think it could possibly be something else?
I recall it only started after i drove on a gravel road and something appeared to get 'stuck' (i think) in one of the wheels (or somewhere in there as it was initially a very unpleasant constant squeal and only when going forwards...) and when i put the car into reverse i heard a metal 'tink' type noise and assumed whatever it was (gravel?) came out (please note that i do not like weird noises!! and i did look under and around the car after that noise to assume nothing important fell out!!!) Other than this the car has been operating fantastically.
appreciate any opinions on this.

Ok well that makes it almost certainly not the park brake module and likely to be something caught within the wheel or brake. Usually gravel will fling out after some high speed driving. I suggest trying to track down exactly where the noise is coming from by having someone walk beside while moving at slow speed. You may have to remove that wheel and fiddle around with the brake backing plate.

I agree with Scott. I've had those symptoms from 2 different causes:
1. crud in the EPB - reasonably simple (should be simpler, I know) process to flush first, remove and clean out if necessary. Well documented on here. There are a few threads but this should cover it Easy way to clean EPB ?; and
2. rear discs/pads at end of life - very squealy
