    Aftermarket wheel nut wrench

    Hey all,

I tried using the standard wheel nut wrench on my D3 yesterday and found it very hard
to fit onto the wheel nuts. After talking to my indy, he quoted the known issue with using a rattle gun on
these and he suggested getting an aftermarket wheel nut wrench with a 22mm socket.

I did a quick search on google and eBay. Has anyone bought one of these that they would recommend?

    TIA,
    Randy

I actually find the LR wheel nut tool a lot easier to use as a normal socket grips the nut too tight and is a bugger to release the nut. Yours are perhaps seriously damaged if you find the LR tool is not working.

It does sound like your wheel nuts are damaged if the wrench doesn't fit properly.

I carry one of these extension handle wrenches & a 6-sided 22mm socket.
SCA, Repco, etc have them and when extended you get much better leverage than factory wrench.

Note that the 6-sided socket type is the key to not damaging wheel nuts.

I've actually gone one step further and changed to solid wheel nuts to avoid even the potential of damaging the weaker original ones where the 22mm size is only a cap over a smaller nut.

    Cheers,
    Scott

Thanks, yeah I think they are damaged. I’ve found that same one at BCF so I’m going to look at getting that, I’m hoping it will at least fit the damaged nuts.

Thanks yeah the nuts I tried are definitely damaged. I want to try another wrench before I consider replacing the damaged nuts.

    Cheers,

When tightening, are you using a torque wrench to get the specified/recommended torque setting?

I am trying to decide on one of those extension bars like above or a torque wrench or both!

    Cheers.

    Damaged wheel nuts

I had this issue a couple of years ago. The integrated metal cover to the nuts become deformed. I bought a 23mm 6-sided deep socket as well as a 600mm long handled 1/2” breaker bar from Repco to get them off.

Replaced them with new nuts sourced from LRDirect in the UK (using the proper 22mm size socket - only six sided - avoid the 12 sided sockets). Getting the nuts from the UK was considerably less expensive than sourcing locally.

I also purchased a Warren & Brown torque wrench from Blackwoods to ensure nuts were torqued properly. Have not had an issue since.
