I’ve just been through this with my Disco 3 SE (I’ll get to writing it up shortly). I looked into doing it myself, but in the end settled on getting the professionals to do it so took it to Tonkins in Adelaide.
There are readily available fascia kits to allow fitment of standard double-DIN head units whilst maintaining the lines of the centre console. What you’ll need to do, though, is replace the factory Harman/Kardon amp under the driver’s seat. This is because the factory head unit and amplifier communicate via a fibre optic MOST bus. Your new, say, Pioneer head unit won’t be able to communicate via the MOST, hence the need for a new amp.
The only downside I can see to replacing the factory amp and head unit is losing the clock in your instrument panel (i.e., the LCD between the speedo and tacho) — evidently, that information is fed via the MOST and when you rip out the factory head unit, your clock will display “- - : - -“ instead of the time.
I put a Pioneer double-DIN unit with CarPlay and reverse camera, as well as a phone cradle and antenna, replacement 5 channel amp for $2275. So, certainly not a cheap exercise, but you’re up for a bit before you even start because of the amp. I’m sure you could save a few shekels by buying cheaper gear, mind. All up to you and the kind of finished product you’re after.
I’m absolutely thrilled with my setup and I reckon the new amp gives you even more out of the factory speakers, which are crackers.
Cheers,
— Andrew
