    (Solved) Indicator issues puma defender

    Hi all,

First let me just say this site has been a HUGE help with addressing minor issues with my 07 defender. I’m not too mechanically minded, but I guess that’s changing slowly!

Today whilst driving my indicators stopped working. No signal on dash either. They flash when the hazard switch is engaged and when locking the doors. I checked the fuses and it all looks fine, so I guess it is either the relay or the indicator toggle switch.

I (think) my high beams are also not activating, but will double check this after work.

I purchased a new 4 plug 12 v 40 amp relay with internal resistance and no luck. This actually stopped the hazards working all together.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this issue..

    1) did I purchase the wrong relay?
    2) can i test my toggle switch somehow?

The previous owner towed a trailer (trailer break and indicator lights on dash). Perhaps I require a special relay to accomodate this?

The old relay was a wehrle 12v 2+1/6x21W flasher unit. Is there a suitable replacement easily available somewhere? I didn’t see anything with these specs at repco.

    Thanks AGAIN!

    Matt

    Solution -

After a day and a half of racking my brain, calling auto electrical shops and researching this and other forums, I stumbled across the solution by chance.

In case anyone else has this issue, my suggested step by step for diagnosing indicator issues:

    1. Check both indicator fuses, fuse box is under steering wheel
    2. Check both HAZARD fuses (triangle symbol). This was MY issue, even though the indicators worked when the hazard lights were engaged, which is why I didn’t check them.
    3. Check hazard switch - switch is wired such that if it has malfunctioned the indicator stalk receives no power.
    4. Check indicator stalk - apparently if high beams (high amp) are used often the switches in the stalk can malfunction.
