It works exactly the same as another engine with a dipstick. Pull the dipstick and wipe with a clean cloth - reinsert and pull out and read - no issues.
If it is reading high then you have too much oil in the engine.

						Hi
The dipstick in our 2.7 tdv6 is all but useless. It is only accurate the first check of a morning, if trying for a second time to confirm it is covered in oil and shows as overfull. Is there a wiper or seal or something in the tube that isn't working or is worn out ?? Failing that, is there a better replacement? Or am i just doing it wrong ??

Be thankful you don’t have the electronic version !
I would prefer an old skool low tech ‘ dipping stick ‘ , can see the oil , check the level ,smell the oil , electronic is a bit disconnected .
At least diesel oil is black or has a black tinge so easy to see on the dipstick.
Dipsticks on some petrol vehicles with clean oil are very difficult to check.
Oh, the electronic one, another example of unnecessary technology for technology sake.
If the sender unit plays up it is an absolute major job to replace it,as some have found out on here

Thanks for the replies. I pull the dipstick, check and it reads ok. Wipe and check it to confirm and now the dipstick has oil all the way up to the little red ball way above the marks which makes me think there's a seal or something in there. None of our other cars - Mazda, Holden, Toyota, or event the 300 TDi - do this. It's really annoying...........
