County rear brake drum removal

Any party tricks for getting the rear drums off an 88 county ?

ensure retaining screw is out, then I hit them with a rubber mallet while levering with a big screwdriver.

deadjust your brake shoes as much as possible.
Then hit drums near wheel studs with hammer.
if this doesnt loosen them hit drums everywhere with hammer
try and prise the drum with lever and hit with hammer
if still stuck undo brake bleeder of brake line to ensure the brakes arent being forced on

Thanks for the feedback people. The wheels cylinders appear to be weeping and the drums rotate quite freely. The (single) retention screw is removed and I have tried the tapping thing. There is a return lip on the backing plate so levering the drum would create damage which I would love to avoid.

Mine have a couple of areas from previous damage, so I just go there. But I suppose you could get someone to pull on the drum while you hit.

I may be confusing it with Series drums, but there should be a threaded hole in between two of the stud holes. A bolt screwed into this will start it moving - 3/8"W from memory. Once started, use the hammer bit - I use a rubber hammer to avoid damage.

It may be rusted onto the hub, so penetrating oil on the join may help.

Have you put a bolt into the threaded hole? That is what you are mean to use for removing the drums.

Take note or pic of how they look for reassembley purposes. Easy to put wrong side on because it looks "right"

I did not have to disassemble it all. I just spread the shoes enough to replace the wheel cylinders. Clean, refit/adjust and bleed. All good.
