    Sticker on side of gearbox

Just having a roll around under my (new to me) D3 and there is a sticker on the side of the gearbox "FT5644289"

It's clean (the sticker) , as are all the bolts around the gearbox sump, which is unlike a lot of the rest of the underside which is covered with dust / mud.

Is the sticker 'standard' or likely to indicate replacement unit / something else?

    Thanks.

Would suggest the gearbox been serviced with a full oil flush and pan replaced with the steel ZF pan. That’s the preferred upgrade as the new pan has a serviceable filter.

    The original pan is plastic.

Any paperwork on her receiving a full gearbox oil service?

It’s recommended by those in the know to be done every 80k kms but LR suggest it’s sealed for life (or 10 years).

No paperwork with vehicle at all; was lost between last owner & me as he put it through auction and I purchased off trader.

Is there any issue with topping up with correct grade transmission oil (all I can find is Penrith bmv at Repco) which could be different brand to what is in there now?

Don’t want to do a full change if possible, but want to make sure it’s topped up.

    Thanks

Worth doing a search as there's plenty of info here for transmission fluid changes/servicing/etc, including a FAQ thread > Disco 3/4 Automatic Transmission FAQ - 6 Speed

    Sticker on side of gearbox

You need to do some homework searching on this enormous subject around the ZF 6 speed.

The origin of the holy grail is a less controversial subject but just accept that only the correct oil from ZF being Lifeguard 6 (LF6) should ever be used. This oil is extracted from the sweat of mermaids and is very expensive.

One thing’s for sure is you don’t want to rebuild one which can happen from 120,000km, especially with heavy towing.

How many kms have you got?

    You’ve got no service history?

I would be a bit scared that the gearbox has been playing up and a recent change done before selling. However, the fact the pan is new would seem to indicate it was done right properly.

It’s usually done at a transmission specialist and properly done is around $1,000 with new pan.

Thanks both; I’ve read the threads but didn’t see any discussion about potential different oils.

284k km and history lost, albeit evidence it’s been done & money spent on it. That said it’s obviously been used, but it cost me ~50% market value, so even with a few $’s to spend at some point, it’s still cheap.

Its my 9th LR and a 3rd vehicle / toy, because I’ve not learnt from the previous 8 about the perils of ownership
