New to LR - any suggestions between SDV6 SE vs SD4 HSE

Willing to spend 110K driveway (Demo or executive used level).
I looked at a few SDV6 models and they are very nice, but HSE options are also very nice.
My budget does not allow for SDV6 HSE.

can any owners comment, if you will miss V6 in daily city driving and touring. (we will not be towing with it).
I am torn between SDV6 or opting for Smaller Engine but higher trim.
Happt to listens to others, who were in this situation and what they end up getting.

Also is the 4 cylinder stressed on a big car - in terms of reliability.

I think if you couldn’t hear the engines then you would be hard pressed to notice a difference between the SD4 and TD6. The SD6 might be just that bit quicker you’d notice. Try them both out on an extended test drive. My dealer let me take one home to be dropped back the next day.

As for the spec, there’s needs and nice to haves. Write down what you can’t live without and see what spec would give you that. I know the spec is a personal thing but for me say an electric adjustable steering column isn’t needed if you adjust it once and then never again. Rear seat entertainment is great too but not if there’s hardly ever anyone sitting there. Which is why I’m happy with the SE spec.

Essentially, in my view, it comes down to if you're towing a massive caravan or not.

    The SD4:
    • Is (marginally) quieter (neither is in anyway loud)
    • Has better fuel economy (neither is thirsty)
    • Has much better service intervals (2 years vs 6 months/whenever the oil dilution starts to happen)
    • No noticeable difference in performance (neither is a race car but neither is sluggish)
    • Is $7ish thousand cheaper

    The TD6:
    • Can tow big things

I test drove both and very quickly came to the conclusion the SD4 was the way to go but as Ron said, it will come down to you're own test drive and needs.

I've had my SD4 for 6 months now and have never been left wanting for power or found it struggling.

    Cheers, Tom

    SD4 hse

I agonised over this same decision.
    A week ago I ordered an MY19 SD4 HSE.

I Test drove an MY18 SD4 which was quite spritely.
i know in the MY19 the SD4 drops from 500nm to 430nm. Same 177kw though.
The SD6 was not available to test drive.

i don’t tow a lot but even if I did it would be occasional and I think would still have a fair bit of power to cover it just not storming out the gates.

for the daily drive, which is mainly my wife plus my enjoyment of driving, I decided that moving up to the HSE was the better option. A number of the options I was after on the SE become standard in the HSE.

so happy with my decision just now need to wait till the delivery date in March.

I have to disagree with some of the comments above.

I've done 15,000k and 6 months in the SD4 HSE. I recently drove the 6 for a day while mine was getting the Phase 4 update and found it much smoother, quieter (not that the SD4 is noisy) and more responsive. I find the SD4 whines (think a diesel sewing machine) when taking off but does have plenty of go when you put your foot down.

As said in a related thread, I've come into the D5 after driving a SDV6 D4 for 3 years so maybe I'm spoiled or biased against the SD4 (500nm).

Familyman, I too was torn between the higher spec trim (HSE) with the SD4 or an SE with the 6. I went with the HSE SD4 because the stereo is much better than the SE and I love my tech. The HSE I picked up off the lot had the TFT dash (standard in the MY18), HUD, drive pack (Blind spot, adaptive cruise, cross traffic, blah, blah), TPMS, solar windscreen, heat/cool seats, 7 seats and roof rails for $107k which I thought was a deal too good to pass up.

6 months down the track I'd trade the tech for the 6 in SE spec without hesitation. Especially now the SD4 is down 70nm to 430nm. Most of the driver aids I find annoying and intrusive (ie collision alert, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise). The TFT looks great but has limited options. The HUD does work as advertised but I'm 6'3" and so tend to look over the top of it.

The SE in the 6 will give much more power along with the air suspension, TR and low range. Option the better stereo and I think its got all I would need.

Familyman, if you're ever around the Bayside (Capalaba or Redland Bay) let me know. You can drop in and see my car. We'll go for a spin.

All the above is of course personal likes and dislikes.

I'd go the 4, but it's personal preferences.

There are some very good end of month/end year deals going at the moment.
You may be able to get a demo or MY17 Td6 HSE for 110k so long as options are limited .
We were offered a My17 last month for what was close to this price

As I ordered mine to spec I did upgrade to the Meridian sound system. I feel that was worth it, the sound is excellent.

I have a D4 HSE and a D5 SD4 HSE. I regularly tow 2.5 to 3+ ton, and I mean regularly. At least weekly, usually 200+ km trips. I changed the colour choice of my D5 at the last minute and foolishly didn’t realise I was downgrading the engine (I noticed it at the dealer, and just said I’ll have it instead of the green - it was an impulse buy and I didn’t do my homework about the different engines available in a D5 - really stupid). I was so angry at myself that I didn’t drive the D5 for a month after I picked it up. Admittedly I’ve only towed once with it, and it seems to have initiated some electrical issues, but the towing was effortless. Approximately 2.5T, up and down hills on the Princess Hwy, for about 220km. I’m now convinced it has sufficient power to rival my D4, despite the torque specs. The accelerator does seem a bit touchy, I’m not sure if that’s just mine - it only takes a gentle push to initiate a huge surge forwards - but it probably doesn’t help that I keep alternating between the D4 and D5, and their accelerator responses are chalk and cheese.
But a warning - I cannot get comfortable in the D5 driver seat. The cushioned headrest protrudes too far forward, and the footwell is narrower.
