    A mate of mine is an agronomist in South Oz and he's told me recently that quite a number of the growers he looks after that have 'roks have lunched the 4cyl engines. It doesn't have a great reputation.
    The V6 seems ok.

    He works for one of the big ag mobs and said that the Ranger has been the best (ie. least hassle) ute they've used in the last few years. All others have been a reliability nightmare across the fleet.
    The one they don't have experience with is the Hilux as Toyota wouldn't budge on their fleet pricing.

    I would say it’s a 50/50 split between Rangers and Hiluxes in our fleet as far as reliability goes. We have dozens of each locally and discussing with others this is what I’ve gleaned. The Hiluxs that do mostly town work seem to have DPF issues and several have had them replaced. The Rangers seem to have less of these issues but we have had 2 burn to the ground in the last 3 months, so I’d put that down as a big negative. Neither due to the much hyped DPF issues - both had only been driven on the road and both were parked up for some time before spontaneously combusting. Cabs have caught fire first so everyone is assuming electrical faults. They are bog standard units, unmodified in any way.

    Mostly though, both brands seem to perform well overall. Having driven both for quite some KM I find the Ranger has a bit more power, and is better appointed that the Hilux, but I find the seat and general arrangement of the dash and controls better in the Hilux. Ranger is much better value though, the Toyota tax makes the Hilux about $5K more overall for a similar spec.

    But I like my Hilux overall which is what I’ve ended up with and 3 years and nearly 150,000KM without any issues. I may even look at buying this vehicle off the lease company next year depending on how much they want for it.

    There is so much competition in the segment,it is ridiculous.
    Generally the Ranger seems to have the best reputation,and many models have coils and disc brakes on the rear.
    Although their auto gearboxes had/have some issues.

    Breaking down the sales figures,more private buyers bought Ranger than any other brand.

    As for Hilux,i don't really know.
    But i would say its pretty good as well,going by the general Tojo reputation.

    The Amarok has no low range in many if not all models?
    So not really a genuine off road vehicle,if you want to do serious off road work.

    Sometimes I'm too dry.................I was being sarcastic in using the word "Clarity" to describe "VW Planning Land Rover Defender and Keep Wrangler Rival, and It’s Electric".
