IIDGAP or Llams for suspension raise

    Hello all
I know that Llam’s is a great bit of kit but would you use it if you had a IIDGAP tool as you can adjust suspension heights. So if I have a Bluetooth IIDGAP tool do I need Llams as well.

Horse for courses. If you irregularly make changes then IID is great. If you were to use it daily then I’d go LLAMS. There is at least one person who uses the IID for this regularly, but I probably wouldn’t if it was more than weekly.

    That may be me

I use it frequently as in several times a week and that would be at start of a trip and then on the return trip as I drop the suspension down to the bump stops to make it easier for my wife to enter the car. The longest part of it is when it logs onto your car and downloads the files when you start the app but that's not that long really. Then it's tap the height control, tap bump stop icon and tap confirm and the suspension drops. I usually just log on when I get into the car and leave it connected until we get to our destination then it's only the 3 taps to drop the suspension again. Of course when you drive off again I would hit the normal height button on the console to speed up raising the suspension as it won't do it by itself until you exceed its speed limit. Bumpy ride otherwise. A word of caution though, always disconnect the app before you leave the car as the tool will keep polling looking for it if you don't and this can cause battery drain issues. The GAPIID site actually says NOT to leave it connected but it is for this reason alone. Mine's been left connected for over 2 years now and I've had no problems. Still running the original battery after 5 years.

Rocked up to the undercover car park forgetting I had just put roof racks on. 2 meters clearance sign. Llamas access height -20mm. No problem. Still had the red button up my sleeve if needed. It’s just that convenient. I’ve got an IID Tool BT. Would have been a much slower process backing up traffic all the while.

Getting elderly people in and out. Go low. Need to clear some large rocks extended or super-extended. Same with water crossings. No need to even stop.

    If finances allow get both.

One of the 1st pieces of kit I boughts was LLAMS. I also now have the IID Tool. But have never used it for raising or lowering the car. I drive around town, in Low height LLAMS, and when hooking up the caravan, also use it and the buttons, to get under the D035 hitch and then raise the car to click into place. So easy with LLAMS. I would guess that manoeuver would be more difficult to do using the IID Tool.

IIDGAP or Liams for suspension raise

I’ve had both Llams and an iiD BT for a few years now. The iiD tool can control the suspension height including preset, saved height settings. This is basically the same result as Llams achieved in a different way. And of course the iiD has many other uses, particularly fault reading and clearing, so would be the obvious choice if only getting one of them. However there are some factors that for me means it's worth having both.

Llams is simpler and easier, requiring just the turn of the dial. If the iiD is always plugged in and the control app on your phone is open then it is almost as quick but that isn't a state that I leave things in. Now if you're needing it very infrequently that's fine because taking a couple of minutes to get setup is no big deal. Another factor; I prefer not to leave the tool plugged in. I used to do that but I felt it was reducing the battery SoC over time. Now it is worse if you forget to log out of the app but even when logged out the tool seems to drain some charge. Also I just prefer not to have the diagnostic port awake all the time; it wasn't intended to do that. What issues will be caused? don't know but seems prudent to avoid even though no specific issues have been experienced that I’m aware of.

Also, when I'm offroad I am running Hema maps on my phone so don't want to be flipping to the iiD app. For offroad driving I find that regularly changing height is beneficial rather than just leaving it high. There's lots of places where medium (+30) works well and then you need +50 for shorter sections. I know some poeple set the suspension to offroad height and leave it there. I find driving at the lowest practical height for the given terrain better; the suspension is less bouncy; a little hard to explain.

When I bought Llams the iiD was in its infancy and not really a valid alternative.
But now that it is a good alternative I would still be getting both.
    Hope that helps.

    Cheers,
    Scott

I agree with the above. If getting one only then IID Tool as it does more. It is a bit of a hassle to set up, so generally I don’t use it for height control. In at least one situation recently I should have taken the time and trouble.

But for height control, LLAMS is always immediately available for a range of situations such as for inner city parking, low underpasses, or off road work.

    I will soon have both.
