    Series 3 Game Wheel Track

    Hello all,

I hope someone can help me. I have just bought a 1977 SWB Game (88") from the ACT and want to register it in NSW. It has 15" Sunrasias on it (as per original I am told) and factory fitted flares on the guards.

The blue slip provider has knocked me back on the Wheel Track measurements. He spoke to the RTA and thinks that it should be 1308mm front and rear but mine come in at 1380mm and 1390mm.

I have spoken to a couple of LR mechanics who all feel that there has been a mistake re the source of the info, but I need to get a copy of a spec to confirm it one way or another.

Does anyone know or could someone point me to a site or somewhere that I can get an answer on this?

    Regards

    Buckerz

    Hi Buckers,

    Welcome to AULRO.

I'm assuming that wheel track is the distance between the wheels measures across the car - driver to passenger side?

If that's the case, then your mechanic is worrying about an extra 4cm width in each wheel.

Standard LR wheels are 16"x5.5" running 7.5x16 tyres, afaik.

So your Sunraysias are non-standard, and I guess are about 15x7.5".

That doesn't exactly sound like a radical modification.

Time to go to another mechanic.

If wheel track is something else, I'm a goose, sorry.

    hth

    Cheers

the Game defintely came standard with Sunraysias, can't remember if they were 15x7" or 15x8", either way, the track would be quite a bit wider tban 'stock' 5.5" rims. It's a shame I don't have any of my old 'Off Road Australia' and 'Overlander' from when I was a kid as I can well remember the copy in one of the mags when it was realeased,
"Land Rover gets Game, and this is standard !"
IIRC, they were all bright yellow, black stripes, flares and white Sunraysias. It was Leyland Australia's attempt to tap into the burgeoning RV market that boomed in the mid-late seventies.

My old '74 CJ6 Jeep that was my first car 23 years ago also had Jeep Australia fitted genuine 15x8" Sunraysias and they had a 3" back spacing, so you can imagine how much wider they made the track

I agree - Games came standard with wide white wheels (Sunraysias?) - the mechanic must have been using the track measurements for a standard Series 3 which is 1308mm and not a Game - I suggest you go back and get him to use the measurements from for the correct vehicle. The RTA should have the correct details in their tech standards database. Sorry but i don't have the Game track measurements.

If the vehicle you bought was the Game from Canberra recently advertised on e-bay - it definitely has the original wheels on it.

    There you go.

It could be listed under one of the other manufacturers in the RTA database - Leyland, Landrover, etc.

The track is the distance between the centre lines of each wheel on the same axle - not the distance between the wheels.

I'm surprised the track is so much wider. I'd expect very little change in track even with wider wheels. The only way the track can change is if the offset of the wheels has been changed.

If you have the same offset, then the wheels can be twice or three times, etc., as wide and the track will not change.

The simplest thing would be to borrow 5 wheels from a standard LR and get it slipped on those.

It just happens that I was at Land Vehicle Spares in Silverdale today and one of our AULRO members simongenet was leaving his Game there for rego inspection.

It might be worth giving the proprietor Brian Danielson a call. LVS are open this Monday (24th) so give them a call. If Brian isn't there ask for George.

I am sure they can do a Bluey as well

HS being an old farm hack, I remember having this (of many) trouble(s) when I put it over the pits for re-registration (blue slip) with the wide wheels. Like wise was told the track was not to specifications.

I just swapped for the second inspection back to roadworthy narrow rim/tyres and put the wides back on after the pass. They have been on ever since (5yrs), still have the narrows in storage just in case.

Out of interest I just went down and measured the front track on HS ('75 SW.

Wheels straight ahead, rims being 15 X 8 aftermarket rims

1400mm exactly to the centres of the tyres on both sides, so they must run straight as per workshop manual spec.

Simplest solution, find someone who has a narrow tyre set you could borrow for the inspection and stick a few blown bulbs in the lights just so the mechanic has something to whinge about other than it being an old land rover. The vehicle will pass, as mine did, then when it's registered put the wide wheels back on.

NB. Mechanic is right about the wheel track, RTA Guidelines show vehicle track must not be altered more than 25mm of manufacturers original spec. If there is only one spec for the SWB being the base model then that's what it has to be on your vehicle regardless of how it came from the factory. Trust me if this mechanic is going to get nasty he will, right down to how many cycles the wipers do in a minute, not to spec. he'll ping you for that too.

true, but the Game was an official Leyland Australia model with wide wheels and a wider track, so there would be a Vehicle Recognition Form somewhere in Oz for it.
