Indicative Cost for Repairing Front Diff?

My go to man in Perth suggests that to remove and re-install the D4 front diff should cost about $1K, and about another $1K for repair/rebuilding after what we assume at this point is a U/S bearing. Car has done 240K km, and apart from some recent heavy towing, mainly urban and highway long distance driving.

Has anyone else had real life experience of coughing up for this repair, or can provide an indication of a fair cost?

Never done one .. in fact, never actually seen one, but having researched a lot about D3s before I made my choice of vehicle a few years ago ... the complexity of the D3(and hence D4) 'scared me off'.
Gone are the days of 'ye olde RRC/D1/D2 front axle ease of repairs.
Half the front of the D3 looks like it needs to be stripped to get anywhere near the actual diff.
So $1K kind'a sorta sounds roughly right(if you actually want the right bloke to do the job).

Of course we all want the 'cheapest possible price for everything', but this attitude will likely cost us all more in the long run as we drive honest folks out of the industry due to the attitude of 'cheapest possible price for everything'.

I got mine done two years ago at WA Diff Centre. I went there as he was the cheapest and my brother had the front on his LC done without issues. I'm away from home atm so can't give the exact number until Sunday. However, IIRC if was well south of $2000. Job was done well with no issues.

Thanks all - very informative. Just to clarify, I'm on the east coast at the moment, otherwise this would be an automatic Dazza job - gotta love a good spanner wielder!!!

Also begs the question - what cost for a new and/or a refurbished diff??

If you're around Sydney give triumph rover spares and Graeme Cooper automotive a call.

Would have done if so, but an in the Sunshine Coast. Tried MR Automotive and British Offroad, but both had time delays before they could help me, so went on a local recommendation. Hopefully get the car back Friday, then continue on trip to NW Qld, Darwin and then home via Highway 1 with deviations.
