electrical fault 94 TDI trayback

Chasing an electrical fault and the wiring diagram doesn't help much.

symptom. if engine not running no headlights. also blowing the 30 amp link fuse.

Is there some sort of voltage regulator as have had same experience with failing alternator however this one is generating about 13.9 volts. Where is it located and what does it look like. Vehicle is also fitted with a turbo timer but no impact on that circuit.

The wiring diagram I have doesn't even show the big link fuses. yes the wiring is old and stiff but no obvious shorts present.

Any comments or observations welcomed. No lucas smoke present at the moment.

Dodgy headlight switch with combo of dodgy earthing of behind dash wiring

Luckily the lighting circuit it pretty dumb n stupid !
Ign Power supply from fuse to column switch to lights
Lights are earthed at front radiator support panel from memory and column switch earthed to earth point in the rats nest behind instrument cluster

easy to chase,

put a spare headlight bulb on a set of spade connectors plug it in where the fuse lives, when its bright you have a short, if its off you have a break if its dull the circuit is probably working, put your meter on in series with the lamp, check the amps drawn make about sense and then replace with a fuse.

my 95 130 had issues with the rear of the fuse block

had to remove the block to see that it was melted at the back where the inserts were..

everything looked fine from the front but had the same issue as you

obviously a previous owner had big lights running off the std setup

fitted new switch, and a traxide headlight and spotlight relay setup and sorted it all
