1998 defender 130 4 door.
I"m torn at the moment My 130 has a disco transfer case in it. I'm no hooney boy 100 kph suits me fine. its slow of the mark and wont pull the skin of a rice pudding unless in low range. Now i have just completed a reasonable trip up the cape towing a camper trailer and can change from low to high range without a crunch 9 out of 10 times. I cant help but think that the Land rover engineers probably know what they were doing and im tempted to go back to the Defender transfer. From what I've read , the disco transfer only drops the revs a couple of hundred rpm. Can anyone confirm this, running 235-85-16 mud terrains. Thanks Baz

Defender ratios for life. Best part about a defender is the low hearing, and with it they can pull higher speeds if required.

Some may tempt you with power upgrades, rebuke them. I wish I had kept my TD5 standard (no tune) and just put lower diff gears and massive tyres on sooner.

TD5 is a little different to the TDI, but I standby my comments.

Ashcroft has a ratio calc on their site that'll tell you all you want to know. Disco box is about 15% taller. I have one in my 110 tdi. Very glad I fitted it. Liked it so much I just had an Ashcroft recon disco trans arrive at my door as mines not long for this world.

Heading to work so a quick comment I see that Ashcrofts do a 1.3 gear set for the transfer case. Anyone tried them??

Anything done to the Tdi Baz?

My old girl had 255/85's and there is no way it would've pulled 1.2:1 gears and that had a big exhaust and the fuel turned up to the max.

Even with 235/85's I needed low second when towing horses

Have you done any work to the 300Tdi?

My 1998 130 weighs in at about 3 tons running 285/75 R16 Mickey Thompson MTZ's.

Dyno data attached. It's probably due for a re-tune.

Allysport intercooler, straight through 2&3/4" exhaust (no mufflers), exhaust wrap from the turbo down past the transfer case, pump tune, standard turbo, silicone turbo hoses. I even had the squashed section removed from the steel pipe that runs between the turbo and intercooler.

Oh and install an EGT gauge (probe in the manifold before turbo) and Boost Gauge (fed from bung in the back of the inlet manifold). I run 14 pounds of boost and back off when EGT's hit 650 degrees.

Car is so different to drive after these mods and the dyno tune.

Try these mods first and go back to the Defender transfer case.

Before I get a retune, I am thinking about getting new injectors and replacing the turbo. At 315,000kms now and these items are still the original.

Pretty stock , have a airport intercooler fitted when I got it. Previous owner stated he did nothing else other then centre muffler by pass. I have rotated fuel pi a bit but left everything else the same.

a 300tdi Defender with 235/85R16 I would have the stock Defender high range.
As an example I only recommend 245/75R16 or 245/70R16 as the biggest tyres to fit on a Disco 300tdi due to its *cough* limited power.
