This post is for those of you, like me, who:
- own a Front Runner Windcheetah roofrack
- want some tie down rings
- have the mechanical aptitude of someone who did well at English and science in Forms 1–5 at a Technical School (ie, was crap at the trade subjects, but once drew a great 8-sided hexagonal nut in technical drawing)
A 2-pack of tie down rings from Front Runner is $15, plus postage.
But all your need from your local hardware store is:
- M8 tie down — about $1.60 each
- M8 bolt — about $0.60 each (I bought 20 mm, as that barely projects into the ring once tightened on the rack)
- M8 washers — about $8 for pack of 40 (nylon seemed a good idea, but others with actual knowledge might suggest better)
- sausage in bread, with onions and sauce — $2.50 (optional)
I now have 8 for less than 2 delivered.

An eight-sided hexagonal nut? No mean feat!
I learned about nuts and bolts when you had to know the difference between American Fine (AF) and Whitworth (W/W).
Thank god for the metric system! M8 is a nominal 8mm diameter with a standard pitch*. Simples.
* yes, I know there are others.
If at first you don't succeed, that's one data point. - xkcd
