GPS Signal through a Heated Windscreen

I have been playing around with my 8" Samsung tablet running OziExplorer on the dash under a heated windscreen.

Sometimes it locks on, sometimes it doesn't. The difference seems to be heavy clouds. Never a problem in the Jeep with a normal windscreen, but if it is really cloudy, no lock under the heated screen.

My not so young Samsung tablet's GPS is unreliable in my MY12 L322 with its heated screen so I use an external BT GPS in the corner of the dash that works well.

Hi,
Some wind screens have metal in the glass, it should be easy to prove by moving the tablet out of the glass 'shaddow'.
Damp trees can also reduce the signal, so clouds may have the same effect.

My Galaxy Tab A works fine and I have the heat attenuated windscreen. I mount it on a RAM mount low and centre on the windscreen.

MY D4 V8 had the heated windscreen, I had no problems with GPS using my iphone and cheap Aldi tablet. Both were mounted in the center of the dash when in use.

I tried many options to get my Note 10.1 2014 tablet to talk to a USB GPS and to accept power at the same time but the USB port wont allow it, so I bought a BT external USB and use GNSS Commander s/w (free) to use the mock location facility. Both Ozi and an amateur radio tracking system use the GPS at the same time.

I got the Note 10.1 after seeing how much better your tablet's display was than my CE device.

Edit: I suspect that my tablet has a poor GPS receiver or possibly just its antenna.

I drove Melbourne to Sydney yesterday and back again today. The tablet held GPS lock the whole way.

Fuel consumption was 8.41 l/100 km going north and 8.31 heading south. Average speed was around 106 km/h both ways. I had hoped for better from the SD6, but not bad. I was on Active Cruise Control most of the time. It takes a little getting used to, but once you are used to it, it is great.

PS I dropped in to the VicRoads weighbridge at Broadford on the way up. Car was nearly full of fuel - I filled up at Kalkallo - and only had a light overnight bag and some snacks as luggage, maybe 10 kg, plus me.

Front Axle - 1260 kg

Rear Axle - 1300 kg

Total - 2560 kg

Tare, including 90% fuel and 75 kg driver - 2311

GVM - 3050 kg

Leaves me 490 kg.

Hmmm.... Didn't think I was that heavy!
