TD5 Crank Position Sensor And Injector Timing Delay?

    Hi Everyone,
I am considering moving the engine ECU (ECM) from under the seat (possibly to the centre cubby box) which will require extending the wiring harness by up to a metre. I would think that most circuits won’t be affected provided that appropriate wire thickness is used and quality connections are made. However I am unsure whether or not the crank position sensor and fuel injector circuits may be affected by introducing a slight delay as a result of the longer wiring. I understand that any delay would be minuscule but injector timing, which is linked to the crank position sensor, is calibrated down to nano seconds.

I am no electronics whizz so I would appreciate if anyone having experience with this or an electronics background, could advise whether or not a significant delay would be introduced.

    Cheers
    Martin

    Won’t cause a problem.

There is a commercially available extension.

Good to hear that it is do-able. I looked up the commercially available extension which is 2m long (Terrafirma TFEL052) but that sure is an expensive little puppy. I guess it is a plug and play and can always go back to original if need.

If I go the cut and splice route then yes I had planned to use shielded microphone cable for the CPS (CKP?) as that has the greatest cross sectional area I could find at 0.30mm2 (22AWG).

Thanks for your help guys. AULRO wins again.

I presume you know about Mulgo’s Xbox
Pretty sure you don’t need to extend the wiring

I do now and I want one! That is a much better way to go and will resolve some other issues at the same time. I presume all the TD5 electricery will fit in there and yes, it looks as though no wire extension needed .
    Thanks.

    Mulgo X-Box

I’ve installed the ECU within the Mulgo X-box. I do however have the Puma 2.2 and there was no need to extend the wiring harness. I did however need to extend the wires for the Bass unit which sits slightly above the xbox.

Not sure what a Bass unit is but I am pretty sure I don't have one. However, I could be wrong....it has happened. The TD5 engine/ECU and ABS ECU harnesses both pass from the passenger side over the top of the transfer case to the driver's side seat box so I am reasonable confident I should be able redirect them upwards into the Mulgo XBox.

Probably losing the thread here a bit but what do people use as heat shield insulation under the Mulgo XBox (name, thickness and where to buy)?

I bought an Aluminium dimpled heat shield from a local auto retailer. Prob 1mm thick and needed tin snips to shape. Whatever you use will be better than not using anything.
