    Defender relays

    I have had an ongoing issue with my relays in my 2005 TD5 Defender. If the car sits in the heat for a few days, various relays stop working. I have replaced all of them several times. I have tightened the connections for the relays. I have pulled all of my hair out, and can't seem to find why this is happening.

    I have gotten to the place where I know what symptoms are for which relay, and can replace without much issue, but is a pain to have to pull the seat off to get to those ones, or pull a relay from in front of the gear lever.

    I have tightened the connectors with a screwdriver. I have not removed and replaced them, but this is the next option on my plate.

    I have purchased about $200 in relays in the past year, and am sick of chasing the issues.

    Any other suggestions?

    I changed to Hella relays and haven't had any issues. The only problem, I came across was the fact that LR decided in their wisdom to swap polarity between connector 85 and 86 which means that normal diode relays don't work. After swapping the connectors in every socket, the Hellas worked fine. Also, have a good look at the sockets and if they have any signs of burns. I ended up rewiring all the relays next to the ECU and put new relay sockets in.

    Thanks for this. I will rewire the relay sockets by the ECU, and my starter motor socket also. Just find it difficult to get to the wiring under the seat, as there is not much to spare.
