I quite enjoy giving my 3.0L D4 a heavy foot in sports mode on twisty dirt roads. Are there any rallys still held where a big-engined (new) Defender would be a sensible entrant? I’d love to watch some footage of that!

Out of the current offerings I’m still far more likely to opt for the 4-cyl D240 engine if I place an order. A diesel 6 would be tempting, but an 8 probably silly given my dreams of long outback trips.

There's plenty of petrol in the outback..not sure why this issue re diesel being the only fuel out there continues as I've travelled with a V8 petrol 100 series in the 'outback' and petrol was readily available...but yes more expensive. However the V8 was totally reliable and used about the same as a 100/200 series diesel. Same can't be said for the diesels many of which gave trouble of some sort eg water in fuel 😞

Yes the simplicity of the diesel engine which was one of it's strong points seems to be a thing of the past.

I saw a video report by some blokes doing their outback trip and the V8 Patrol got left behind in some outback town because no petrol was due to be delivered for another couple of days.

Separately, the Defender reports from Namibia said on a couple of occasions that the petrol 6 was drinking about twice as many litres of fuel as the diesel 4.

It’s just my preference. In the places where only a 4WD can go, I’m more inclined to crawl than “send it”. I like the thought of having more range, less weight and a few more litres of space in under the bonnet and in the boot to stash mods or accessories.

But heck yes would I enjoy an afternoon of Defender rally driving with a V8 beast. I’ll have my moments of envy if that thing ever makes it to the tracks.

    Wow 2x as much..that's a worry😞

Thought petrols were quite efficient nowadays but yes on balance diesels are still ahead on overal fuel efficiency and range for same tank capacity. I'm afraid I've gone right off them for cars/4wds due to the unreliability and cost of running them nowadays.

But...a large capacity V8 diesel (not a lazy Toyota dusty V8 tho) such as a Duramax I might go for. My SIL is putting one in a GU right now. He's given up on the TD42s due to cost and reliability issues when boosted for power.

Can't wait to see how it turns out.

But they would have been flogging the ring out of it no doubt.

Even the diesel 4 isn't that fuel efficient, buy their reports, and other reports from people that own the lighter D5.

You know what..the styling of the new defer is actually growing on me. At first i thought it was butt ugly and a stupid facsimile of the old car...but now..especially with more aggressive wheels and given it looks bigger in real life...I like it a lot☺

I really like it, especially if they give it a 6cyl diesel, but it's ass is a show stopper to me. If they can style the front and middle, top bottom and inside, then surely they could style the rear also.
