    255/60R18 highway pattern for towing, Highway use and general commuting

    Found an older thread discussing 255/60R18 tyres for on and off road use, but haven’t found a thread on highway pattern.
    Our MY12 D4 TDV6 is mainly used for general commuting as the family van, towing either the box trailer, horse float or a boat and/or highway journeys away. The only off road stuff is just through paddocks dropping horse feed etc. so I’d rather not add any road noise or compromise on road performance with the use of ATs when they’re unnecessary in this application.
    Any recommendations on any particular HP tyres to suit?

    I ran the General grabber AT3 xl. Not a Light truck construction Tyre but extra load with mild AT tread pattern. They don’t look aggressive and I didn’t hear boo out of them. Seriously good. Dropping off feed and horse floats is a bit above highway duty I’d reckon but you’ll probably get away with it. Toyo have that profile as well in a QT ( quiet ) HT tyre but I haven’t used them. I did tun the toyo open county 2 in an AT and they where quiet on a Prado so I expect the QT on the Disco even better.
    Either way in 18” profile you spoilt for choice.

    It probably makes up less than 0.1% of the vehicles use by distance traveled. We'd happily be able to do it with just an old Ford Falcon so it's not overly hard on the vehicle.

    That's part of the problem - spoilt for choice so how to choose one over the other!

    I found the Pirelli Verde tramlined a little on the D2 when they were worn right down but still had a surprising amount of wet weather grip.

    GT Radials HT's were on the D2 when I picked it.
    They wear like iron and coped surprisingly well living in Central Australia with a lot of time off road, and then spent lots of time on the dirt driving back through the NT, Sth Oz (the Flinders) and western NSW.
    They don't have the grip of the Pirelli or my current Falken Wildpeaks on road but were an honest tyre.

    On my old Disco 3 I ran Pirelli Scorpion Verde's. They were a softer tyre, but the ride and noise was beautiful. Very Quiet, handles beautifully, and good on fuel. Much nicer than the other D3 I had running BFG AT's prior

    I've got the Pirelli AT+ on my D4 now. They're a good tyre, but with an AT style pattern they are stiffer and louder, and it sounds like you don't really need that extra tread.

    Is there a Hankook Dynapro AT in that size? Very happy with ours, but they are 235/85/16s for the Defender. Not too aggressive or noisy on road, but has handled outback Qld dirt, so a good compromise.

    We ended up changing to slightly bigger 265/60R18 tyre size. These size tyres are available dirt cheap in almost new due to the amount of people buying fancy Rangers and Amaroks etc. then removing them for muddies etc. Picked up a set of four Dunlops with 1mm tread depth wear and six months old for $300.00 - Gumtree seemed to have many more similar deals on offer too.
