    Advert on TV

Saw an advert on TV earlier this evening for the new Defender.
Gave a 'passing wave to the relatives', an 80", didn't check to see if it was HUE.

Way out of my price range (and I get a car allowance from my employer) plus the service costs at LR are over double what I pay on my daily driver.

It isn't aimed at the traditional Series/Defender driver and I fully understand why, they need to sell volume to justify development, production costs etc. It also needs all the modern luxuries, safety features, Apple Car Play (whatever that is ) etc. The last real Defender was expensive to build, the sales didn't justify keeping it in production and meeting modern safety requirements was becoming a problem.

The new one looks like many of the other 4WD's in the market, glue a kids lunchbox to the rear side window of a Pajero and you wouldn't tell the difference from a distance.

With all the onboard electronics it will probably be a consumable rather than a durable (to be fair every other car on the market is also a consumable). It'll be interesting to see how the sales go.

Personally I wouldn't buy one, if someone gave me one I'd drive it as long as I didn't have to pay the service costs !

If you're buying one I wish you the all the best with it, just not my 'cup of tea'.

Interesting how marques such as BMW and Merc don't seem to attract the same comment as LRs eg waay over top prices etc.

To put it in context son's mate bought a 2020 Paj costing @54 grand to replace a 2006 X5 diesel. Nice car yes...dated styling...yes..well equipped 7 seater...yes..well sort of.

So I asked the wife what she thought about the Paj. It's not as good as the X5 she said..it has less features..it's slower and not as good to drive. Hubby looked a bit miffed.

So...you gets what you pays for..oh and lease/interest rates have never been lower.

I'm well aware that Merc prices are up there with Land Rover. Replace glowplugs on a Sprinter $1,700, more suits in the dealership than at Peter Jackson.
Prices of BMW, Lexus, Infinity etc. will be up there. A lot of the prices are based on the perceived 'image' and the servicing costs are proportional to the number of 'suits' in the dealership.

You'll probably see the comments about Land Rover's high prices on a Land Rover forum because a lot of members are running older vehicles from an era before LR moved their image and prices 'upmarket'.

I'm not convinced you always get what you pay for, especially when it comes to servicing.

I was passing the LR dealer In Wollongong and saw the Defender outside so had a look. They are big inside and seem comfortable. It will certainly be a replacement for my D4 in time to come. I would go for the D300 HSE. The nav and the computers are upgraded via a SIM card below the screen.
I would also wait for the 2022 upgrade so all the bugs will have been fixed and reliability proven.
2012 Fuji White 3.0 D4, Rear view camera, Hi-line sound, E-diff, Xenon lights, ARB winch bar, Lightforce 240 50w HID. Brads sliders.

Good thinking - 2020 and 2021 will be still full of Corona bugs.
