Td5 VGT Turbo vs Hybrid turbo.....Anyone tried both?

After my oil pump bolt came loose .... you can read my other thread about it ..
It has ruined my Hybrid turbo... there is a lot of play in the shaft and a high pitched whine. So my question is has anyone tried both the hybrid and vgt turbo on the td5.
Is there really much difference between the 2? Is the vgt that much better then the hybrid?
I'm trying to work out if I should just go a vgt or not. I've been trying to get back onto jose at td5inside but as usual I get no reply. Who else sells the vgt turbo for the td5? I'm after some feedback and any help would be appreciated. I took my turbo off today so I'm ready to make a decision. I took a standard turbo off my spare engine and might just put that on in the mean time.

Hybrid has good middle to high power but not really an bottom end, but an VGT has , I got td5inside hybrid but will hopefully get the new VGT from alive which will come out soon

Jose won't send vnt to aus and many of us here have asked for months and months and nothing, so alive tuning is our best option as they will ship to Australia

If you can wait, wait for the vgt turbo as there will be two sizes, standard and bigger race spec one

They're not mutually exclusive. You can have a hybrid VNT (e.g. TurboTechnics S220, Td5Inside's CrTurbo range, Alive Tunings upcoming VNT offering, Empire Tunings VNT offer, etc) or a VNT which is based on a standard size turbo (e.g. the TurboTechnics S208).
None is necessarily better than any other - it's subjective based on what you want to achieve and purpose of it - your tuner will also effect the outcome far more than you may realise.
Generally in all cases, with all other things being equal, the VNT version of standard or hybrid will be superior for drivability and response at least.

Jose from Td5Inside has no more stock of his CrTurbo offerings for this year. He also isn't currently exporting them to Australia even if he did have stock. The TurboTechnics, while much older units, have a long history of service and reliability on Td5 applications. There's a number of other brands with recent offerings or soon bringing out offerings.

That's where Their vgt will be good down low, hybrid are good but mine being an manual an bit of lag down low

It's a reasonably good hybrid turbocharger. I haven't seen any complaints and it seems to do what is expected. As always, the particulars of the tune will greatly effect it's overall gains and performance though.

There isn't necessarily a 'better', it's more better for particular applications and use. You need to first consider what you want to actually achieve, then you can use this to assess the appropriate product to achieve this.

Have you looked at their website at Td5 VGT uprated turbocharger - AlliSport ?
It clearly shows that it's a Turbo Technics unit. There's plenty of information about them already - some of us have been using them for close to a decade - if you do some searching you'll have plenty to read.

Yes, but also not quite that simple. Not all VGT are equal.

If your want list is based on compared to a standard setup, then the Turbo Technics S208 will achieve that. It will significantly increase your response, eliminate lag, substantially increase low end power/torque and improve the mid. There will be minor improvements at the top end (mainly due to the improved impeller design by using a CNC machined unit rather than a cast) too - but you didn't list this as something you were chasing anyhow, so it's just a bonus.

It's also likely the VNT that's been around the longest so has a proven track record of reliable use.

I recommend using Jose from Td5 Inside to tune for it. Get rid of the turbo boost box, have a software MAF clamp applied rather and upgrade your MAP sensor to the Bosch Mercedes-Benz unit (with the tune adjusted to suit) if needed.

You'll also need to remove the waste gate actuator from service. I suggest plumbing the waste gate boost line directly into your inlet manifold/EGRdelete inlet to maximise response and boost levels.

Alternatively, the upcoming Alive Tuning VGT may suit your needs to but you'll need to wait for it's release, it'll likely be more expensive, but give better top end gains, and doesn't have a history of proven reliable use.

Storm Tuning also offer various VGT (see their website at < Storm Tuning – Bespoke Land Rover Tuning > for details but I'm not aware of details.

Empire Tuning have adapted an off the shelf VGT using an adapter spacer to the Td5. A number of other big names had previously tested this turbo on the Td5 application and found it lacking. I'd avoid it.


You may also wish to consider upgrading your exhaust manifold when fitting the new turbocharger to maximise performance gains.


For clarification, when you say "power.. we all want that" - where do you want it though? I assume from your line above your looking at down low and mid range for it. But given you currently have a hybrid fitted you likely have improved mid and top end than standard at present - are you wanting to retain these along with your want list above? If so you'll need to be looking towards a hybrid VNT, something bigger, rather than the S208 which is close to standard turbo sizing.
