Hey all,

any thoughts on this flywheel? Is it a custom made one, or adapted from something else? It has the dowel holes for 9" and 9.5" clutches, spigot bearing and holden starter ring gear. Just pulled it out of my IIA with a 186 conversion, it had the 9" clutch as in the pics. You can see the step machined in so there's enough meat to take the LR clutch.

I think I'll put a 9.5" clutch in as they seem easier to get hold of these days. IIRC there's a specific clutch cover for the IIA with a spacer that is different to the III version?

Did you work out which clutch to use? I have the same looking flywheel but it has no dowels or they have broke. Its a bit of a mystery as the friction plate was missing. Will the later 9.5" fit and earlier 2a gearbox?

I fitted the 9.5" clutch, I just had to remove the two dowels from the 9" one and replace them with three for the 9.5" - my flywheel was drilled for both. You may find someone has machined the dowels down to the surface, I've seen that before on old holdens, but I'd be very wary of fitting a clutch without them.

The two clutches were optional throughout 2a production, and there are no gearbox differences. As noted though, the clutch cover or pressure plate is not the same as the Series 3, but has a spacer added to it to match the release sleeve on the 2a gearbox.

Purpose made flywheel that would have been supplied as part of the Holden engine conversion kit.
They are very similar in appearance to a Holden Red motor flywheel, but a bit heavier and slightly larger in diameter across the face, to accept the PCD of the Land Rover pressure plate bolt pattern. Some conversion kits had flywheels made from cast iron, others are steel and weigh a bit more again (about 12.5 kg from memory). The steel ones are not quiet as nice to the friction/clutch plate, which result in a bit shorter clutch life.

Are the pressure plate circumference bolts are in the same position on the 9inch and 9.5 inch? or has your flywheel been drilled in different positions or is it just the dowels that are in different place.

I see also that the clutch slave has a spacer for the 9.5" clutch. did you need to put this spacer in?

Ah sorry yes the bolt pattern is the same for the two clutches so you can fit either. The 9" has two dowels, the 9.5" has three - the flywheel was drilled for both options so I just got three new dowels and put them in.

Yes you have to add the packing piece under the slave cylinder to use the 9.5" clutch.

Great that's the info I've been trying to track down. Where did you get the plate from? I haven't found a seller yet. I was thinking of making one. Wouldn't be too hard.

Yeah, I have had no luck finding one either. I've asked a few of the smart chaps here how thick they are so I can make one up, if I find out I'll post it here for everyone.

I read 1/8 inch but now I can't find the webpage to confirm it. It has 3 part numbers I can see. 544686 or 591988 or frc2402

The picture suggests thick, the part numbers are much thinner.
