    Just had this unfortunate experience and wonder if others would like to share their experiences with me

    Never heard of it - how old / how many km has the car done?

    Yes, definitely not common. IIRC Std replacement interval is every 7 years or 160,000km.

    Has belt failure been confirmed ?, its more likely another component in the timing gear or possibly chain/tensioner has failed.
    The tensioner mount on my 2.7 D3 broke and i was able to repair it easily and cheaply.
